“Well,” said Ms. Jones, “Your body has a first line of defense, which is a non-specific defense,
which keeps the germs, or microbes, from entering your body. This is the skin, nose hair, and
mucus.Imagine them as a wall and the first line of defense are the guards telling the microbes
they can’t enter. When you get a cut, it’s like your wall has been broken, and a seal quickly
forms over this break, called a blood clot.”

microbes from affecting other places. In real life, this causes you to have a fever and
swelling. Imagine this as a ring of fire trapping the bad guys. Then, these big eaters come,
called phagocytes. Phagocytes are white blood cells that eat up the invaders, microbes,
and dissolve them with enzymes before they can do harm.”
