WHERE IT IS
La Alhambra is located in Granada, Andalusia, south east of Spain. It is a stunning palace and fortress complex that dates back to the mid-13th century and is a prime example of Moorish architecture.
PARTS OF THE MONUMENT
It is made up of three different buidings:
1. The Alhambra, originally a Nasrid fortress, was transformed into a royal palace between the 13th and 15th centuries, showcasing Islamic architecture with horseshoe arches, stucco work, and poetic inscriptions.
2. The Generalife, another palace with incredible gardens and fountains, reflects harmony between nature and architecture.
3. Albaicín preserves Granada’s Moorish urban layout with narrow streets and whitewashed houses.



IMPORTANCE OF LA ALHAMBRA IN THE PAST AND NOW
The Alhambra played a key role in Spanish history, witnessing the fall of the Nasrid kingdom in 1492 and subsequent modifications by the Catholic Monarchs.
Despite centuries of change, its Nasrid artistic elements, such as the Palace of the Lions, the Comares Palace, and the mocárabe vaults, remain iconic. Its strategic hilltop location provided defense while also offering stunning views of the Sierra Nevada and Darro River valley.

Today, the Alhambra faces preservation challenges from mass tourism, urban development, climate change, and seismic activity. Restoration projects has been made in order to maintain its integrity.
Organizations like UNESCO, the Patronato de la Alhambra, and the University of Granada oversee its conservation, focusing on sustainable tourism, water management, and community involvement.



What done and to be done
It is one of the most visited monuments in Spain: around 2.5 to 3 million visitors a year.
So it the Alhambra plays a vital role in Granada’s
economy, generating €490 million annually and supporting
thousands of jobs.
To protect these sites, initiatives include eco-friendly
infrastructure, educational programs, and cultural events.
Visitors are encouraged to follow preservation guidelines,
while the local community actively participates in
conservation efforts.
