Part One
Paul Bunyan was famous for being a giant and
having incredible tree--cutting abilities. He
was also known for having a kind heart.

Paul was a giant! He was...taller than the
mountains? Than the clouds? Nope. He was as
tall as the moon. He often bumped his head
against it.

Most of you have heard the story of Paul
Bunyan, but this is another story. That's right,
this is about Paul Bunyan's family.

Paul was born a giant of a baby. He was
seventy pounds! Eventually, his folks had to
get rid of him for his size.

So Paul set off on his own in the wilderness,
and soon found a job he liked. It happened
that he just happened to find an ax the perfect
size for him! So every single day, he cut down
tree after tree until there was a vast land of
tree stumps in which we now call The Great
Plains.

One day Paul was coming home from
another long day of work, like delivering logs
to villages and then cutting down more. But as
he was dragging his huge, heavy ax, he
accidentally made a giant hole. It is now called
the Grand Canyon.

But except for his short trips to deliver wood
to small villages, Paul was rather lonely. All
that would change in a few months.

On a cold, snowy winter day, Paul looked out
from his camp and saw that the snow was blue
from cold.

Suddenly, he heard a terrible cry.
"Maaaaaa!"
Paul mumbled,"Sounds like someone's in
trouble," when he heard the cry again.
"Maaaaaaaaa!"

Paul heard the sound was coming from a
giant hill in the distance. He followed the
sound, and saw some huge trees with no
branches on the hill. He gave a tug at the
trees.

Surprisingly, the whole hill moved!

Paul took an even bigger pull, and realized
that this was no hill. He uncovered a lot of the
snow, and he realized that the "hill" was a
giant, blue baby ox! And the bare trees were
its horns!

Paul said,"Poor fella. Tell you what. I'll take
you back to my camp, and you can warm up
by the fire. I'll name you...." and he thought
for a minute,....."Babe."

So Paul did what he said he would do. He
carried his new pet back to his camp, and even
though he was a giant, he still had trouble
carrying the young ox. By the time they were
there, Babe had already grown four feet!

Paul chuckled, and couldn't help commenting
by saying,"You and me are just alike. From
now on, we're a team."
