Instinct
~ an instinct is a process where the animal's brain react
to something automatically unexpectedly. It is not a
learned behavior but a behavior that happens in the heat
of the moment requires no thought process.
Example: A lion is sleeping and suddenly wakes up when
he hears the zookeeper open the cage door.

Hibernation
~ Hibernation is a process where certain animals
"lay low" during extreme weather conditions. As in
result, they have low body temperature, heart rate
and slow metabolism. They do this in order to
conserve energy that they have stored.
Example: A bear hibernates in a den throughout
the harsh winter because it is hard to fin berries,
fish and other food that may be scarce during
winter.

Estivation
~ Estivation is the opposite of hibernation. In this
case, animals go in a deep prolong sleep when the
climate is very hot or dry. Most animals in the
desert such as snail and salamanders estivate
during months when the weather conditions are not
fit for their need.
Example: Turtles are cold-blooded animals, which
means that they cannot stand heat exposure for a
long time. During estivation, many turtles bury
their head in sand for weeks (even months!) to
remain cool.

"birds migration" online image. flickr.

Migration
~ Migration is a process where one organism move
to another place for specific reasons. Many birds
migrate as well as fishes when the climate is
unfavorable for them. Most of these animals to a
similar niche (similar habitat) to meet their needs.
Migration has many reasons such as climate
survival, food supply, or escaping predators.
Example: Birds migrate to north or south depending
on the climate. Most birds migrate when the insect
population or plants are increasing in specific area.

Habituation
~ Habituation is a form of learning where the animal stop
responding to other signals around them. They form a
habit and get use to having no response in things that
they don't have any danger in. This is an effect on the
nervous system of the animal as it gets use to its
environment.
Example: A deer that live near an highway suddenly stop
responding to cars driving by as they get use to their
environment.

Imprinting
~ Imprinting is a behavior where the animal
follows his/her parents after being born. They
develop characteristics through seeing and doing
what their parents do. Some animals usually
consider the first thing they see as there parent.
Example: Ducklings, after being born, watch and
do exactly what there mother is doing. They can
imitate characteristics as well as movements to fit
into the environment.

Trial-and-error
~ Trial-and-error is a behavior where the animal
keeps attempting to get the desire goal after
failing the first time. Instead of giving up, animals
sometimes create a method to solve the problem
just like you would to figure out a math problem.
Example: A dog sees a tennis ball outside the
fence and tries to jump over the fence to get it but
fails. After several tries, he cut up hole in the
fence to get the ball.
