Vasil Levski was born on July 6, 1837, in Karlovo. His name was Vasil Ivanov Kunchev. He became a monk at a young age, dedicating himself to spiritual life. However, he soon realized that Bulgaria needed freedom more than anything. He took the name Levski (lionlike) once he leaped like a lion, a moment that symbolized his bravery and strength.
