Dedicated to Lydia, one of my best friends who inspired me to make the character in this book: a raindrop named Lydia!

Hello! My name is Lydia.
And I am your narrator.

AH! Who said that?!
Um, your narrator....

Oh.... I thought I was the star, but okay.
Today we are going to learn about our earth! Our planet! Our home!

THAT"S MY HOME!!!!!
We know. This is the earth. Home to animals, plants, and of course, US!
The earth is 71% water and 29% land.
Wait... isn't there land... UNDER the water?
Wait... aren't......I supposed to be the clueless one??

Rude.
Anyway, today we are going to focus on. . . .

The OCEAN!!!!
For now, we will focus on the deep sea. Did you know that we have more maps of Mars than we do of the deep ocean floor?
That's a weird fact! But before we get into all that, let's look at our ocean's tides.

Moon: Ruler of the tides (haha!)

The ocean rises and falls twice a day during Earth's rotation. The side of the earth closest to the moon bulges. Meanwhile, the moon's gravity pulls the ocean towards it, causing high tide.

Now it's my turn to be in awe! Thanks for telling us, Lydia!
On the other side of our blue marble....
The side the moon is NOT facing...
Psst, Lydia! Spin the globe for me!

...the ocean is pulled away from earth's center, creating another high tide.

So that must mean all the places in between are low tide, right?

Correct! Now let's venture into the deep. Hold your breath!
This place is crazy and unknown. Fish have feet, animals can go a year without food-

I'm scared.
Below the last bit of sunlight in the ocean, we enter a dark place called the Twilight Zone.
Ella
Here are some animals and facts!

Lantern fish

Pyrosome

Humboldt Squid

Fun Fact: Swordfish's eyes are the size of tennis balls! That's bigger than my brain!
Swordfish
Another fun fact: 90% of the ocean's fish reside in this zone. Yowzers!

Under the Twilight Zone, we have the Midnight Zone! Let's look at some of the animals here:

Sea cucumber

Sea Toad

Fangtooth
Fun Fact: Fangtooths can eat a fish that is a whole third of their size! And swallow it whole!

Wait, I'm confused. How do all these animals see with all of that darkness in there?
I'm glad you asked! Some creatures use bioluminescence to light up the waters of the deep, and as a sign that tells some predators to stay away.

Oh! I've heard about these animals before! Let's look at some of them.

Tomopteris worm

Atolla Jellyfish

Vampire Squid
Fun Fact: Vampire squids are not actually squids, though they have the appearance of one. And don't worry, they're not actually vampires either.

OH, PHEW!!
Far above the deep is the coral reef! I've landed here before.... It's very colorful and bright, unlike the deep.
Heard that! Here are some kinds of animals that reside there:

Shark
Sea Turtle
Manta Ray
Dolphin
