Chapter 1
"Let Me Introduce Myself"
Hi, my name is Cappie. I am a rescued Chocolate Labrador Retriever. I am about
twelve months old and I had a bit of a rough start before I met my new family. Let me
tell you a little bit about myself. I was adopted by a truck driver as a puppy. One cold
winter night he put me outside in a pen with no food or water and he never came back.
It seemed like such a long time, but it was only two weeks. There were times that I was
so cold and hungry. I would curl up to keep warm and drink melted snow when I was
thirsty. I hoped my owner would come back to get me, but he never did.
One day a lady came to get me. she was from Angels for Animals. She took me to
her shelter and fed me and gave me a warm place to sleep. I was so hungry and thin
because I hadn't eaten in a long time. I stayed there for awhile and had a lot of friends
who didn't have a family like me. Every day people would come and visit and sometimes
my friends would be adopted, but I never was. I wondered if I would ever get a home
and family. One day, after I had given up hope, a family came in and played with me.
They adopted me! They were a nice family, but they had two little dogs. I tried to treat
them like sisters, but they never wanted to play and they got really mad when I took
their toys. Their toys were really fragile and they broke easily when I tried to grab them.
Well, to make a long story short, I got in trouble for playing too much. Can you imagine
getting in trouble for playing too much? I just didn't understand it. I never did quite
understand humans!

One day, my new mom took me to her office and told me that I was being
adopted again by a new family. At first, I was so sad. I felt like no one wanted me or
loved me. I was a likeable dog, or at least I thought so. Well, it was
finally time to meet my new family for the second time. I really hoped that
family number two would want to keep me. I was really beginning to feel so
sad and I kept thinking that something was wrong with me. Was I too big?
Did I want to play too much? Did I bark a lot? I kept wondering why no one
wanted to give me a new home. Finally, after waiting a long time, a tall, blonde
lady came into the office, looked at me, and said I was cute. Hmmm, maybe
this family might not be so bad. She said she had gone to the pet store and
bought me a bunch of toys, a bed and a crate. I wondered what kind of toy a crate
was.
I got into the car with her and on the way home she kept telling me how
cute I was. I was beginning to think that this family may be the family I have
been looking for. I kept looking out of the window to see if anything looked
familiar to me. The lady kept telling me we were going home. I wondered,
where was home? Suddenly, the car went through some big black gates and
the lady said that we were home. This wasn't a house, it was a little smaller than a
house. There wasn't a big yard. I was a little worried, would there be enough
smells and grass for me to go to the bathroom? I would have to go out and mark my
spot. We went inside and I couldn't believe my eyes! There in the middle of
the family room was a bed just for me and a box of toys!

Not the little toys that my other family had for those little dogs, but big ones,
ones I could sink my teeth into, and I did!
My first day
in my new house.
I think I may like
it here!

Chapter 2
"My New Family"
The first thing my Mom and Dad did was change my name. My name had been
Missy, then Macy. That wasn't too bad to get used to because it sounded the
same. My new family decided to call me, Cappie. Cappie, I wondered, what is a
Cappie? I overheard them telling their friends that it was short for "The Captain".
I guess I am a captain. I wonder what a captain does? They told their friends that
they were going to buy a boat some day and that I would be the captain. I hope
they realize that I have never been on a boat before, so I don't know how I will
do at being a captain!
After a few days, I felt at home. My new Mom and Dad kept telling me how
cute I was and how much they loved me. I was really trying hard to be a good
dog. I really wanted them to love me. I think this may be my new home to stay. I
knew I was staying for a while because they took me to a Veterinarian. He is a
doctor for dogs. His name was Dr. Albert. He was funny. He kept making jokes
about me. He said I would be getting a shot. The only thing that surprised me
was that I felt something odd in my bottom. Ouch! Whatever it was it hurt a lot!
My Mom said it was a thermometer. My Mom also said that I was normal, so I
must be ok.

Boy, did my Mom and Dad have a lot of questions for Dr. Albert.
After that we went to the pet store. That's the best toy store for dogs! I got
all kinds of bones and toys. I have a habit of barking when I get all excited, so
Mom and Dad figured they'd shut me up with bones when I barked. They also
signed me up for obedience lessons, so sometimes I must have been bad.
On Monday morning, Mommy told me that she loved me and put me in the
crate. Now I know what a crate is! It's a big cage that keeps dogs out of trouble
while people go to work. When Daddy came in to say good-bye and saw me in
the crate, I gave him such a sad face! I put my ears down and my face on my
paws. I made my eyes look very sad, too. My Daddy felt so bad for me, so he
went and got his t-shirt along with a blanket to put in the crate with me. It made
me feel so much better because I had my Daddy smells with me all day. Daddy
also turned on the TV for me. He put cartoons on for me. My favorite is Scooby
Doo. After a few hours, I really had to go to the bathroom. Good thing my mom
got a pet nanny to come and let me out. I really had to go! I didn't like the crate
much, but when my Mommy and Daddy went to work, I had to go in there, so I
got used to it. I slept all day and was really ready to play when they got home
from work.

After dinner, my Mommy and Daddy would go to bed. They were tired after a
long day at work. After they were tucked into bed, I would bark at them until
they would play with me. It worked!
Wow, do I have a great Dad. Every night after he gets home from work he
throws the ball for me. He also taught me how to catch a frisbee. I catch it
almost every time! I love to play with my Daddy. It's so much fun! I think he
loves to play with me, too. He always tells everyone how good I am at catching
a frisbee.

Chapter 3
"Then I went to School"
I had heard other dogs talk about school, but I didn't really know what school
was. Mom and Dad told me that I was going to go to obedience classes. They
explained to me that it was a school for dogs. I wasn't quite sure what a school
was, so I was a little scared. I really worried about fitting in at school.
Sometimes it's hard for me to sit still and that's why I get into trouble, a lot.
My Mommy always says that I am gifted and so smart. That must be my
problem, I get bored very easily. We arrived at the pet store which is my
favorite toy store. This school thing won't be too bad since it's in the same
place as the toy store. As we were walking in the door, I noticed a lot of other
dogs in a great big square walled-in area in the middle of the store. This must
be my classroom, I thought. Wow! There were so many other dogs of all colors
and sizes. All of the dogs wanted to play, too, even the little ones. I think
school is going to be fun! Look at all of these toys and bones and the smells!
Oh boy, I thought, I can't wait to get started. Then we walked into my
classroom in the middle of the toy store. I was a little scared because there
were a lot of dogs and they looked a lot different than I did. Some were very
small and had high-pitched barks, while others were big and had very loud, low
barks.

They would smell my bottom, which I know is a "dog thing," but being the lady
that I am, I was a bit embarrassed to say the least! So trying to be polite, I
smelled their bottoms right back! I guess it was a way to get to know them
better. Suddenly, I smelled treats! Oh boy, I thought, this school thing is going to
be fun! Daddy always has treats in his pocket just for me. I was a little confused,
though, Dad didn't just give me a treat, he kept telling me to sit, roll over and
shake. I soon learned that if I did those things that I would get a treat. I loved
treats so much that I did anything my Dad asked me to. I did so well that I was
first in my class. Mommy and Daddy were so proud. I got a special certificate
when I graduated from my first class.
In class, there was this really big dog and his name was Roman. He kept
telling me in "dog language" how hard it was for him to learn. Learning came
easy for me, but for some dogs I guess it is not so easy. I tried to help him and I
would try to "show" him what to do, but he tried and tried and he still couldn't
do it. I felt bad for him because he got so frustrated that he growled and fussed
so much that his Mommy and Daddy couldn't bring him to school any more. I
felt so bad for Roman. I only wish that I could've explained to my "human"
Mommy and Daddy why he was being so grumpy.
