In the country of Canada, far, far away from
Ireland is a beautiful place called Banff
National Park. Banff is where many people go
to ski each year. The scenery is breathtaking
and the mountains surrounding this park are
the Rocky Mountains. When standing on top of
them and looking up, they are so very high
that it seems the next place up must be
Heaven. There are many wild animals living in
the mountains. The biggest of them all are the
huge Brown/Grizzly Bears.

They grow so big they are the kings of the
mountains. There are about 25,000 Grizzly
Bears living in Canada. They are usually called
Brown Bears but because the hair on their
heads and shoulders is rather long, with the tip
of the hair being white, they got the name
Grizzly. These Bears weigh a lot but can run
forty miles an hour. They can smell and hear
very well but have poor eyesight. They live for
about 15 years unlike humans who can live to
be 100 years. They have very long claws
which are very good for digging in the ground.
They love to eat berries, grass, seeds, deer, elk
and fish, particularly Salmon.

In the mountains in Banff lives a very special
family of Bears. In this family are three boys
named Sal, Kyle and Ross. They live with their
Grandpa whose name is Jonny. Grandpa takes
great care of his three boys since they came to
live with him. They are living with their Grandpa
since their parents died from eating some really
bad food. He is very protective of the boys and
they love him very much.
In Ireland is a place called Cork. There, lives a
wonderful five year old boy named Kyle. Kyle is
no ordinary boy.

He is a gentle and kind boy. He loves learning
about different places around the world on his
computer. His Mum and Dad encourage him to
learn, and he dreams of traveling to those places
when he grows up. Kyle has lots of Uncles and
Aunts who love him very much. He has a
favorite Uncle, Alan. Uncle Alan takes time to
play with Kyle and helps him with his computer
skills. Kyle goes to school each day and his
teachers say that he is a good boy, and is
attentive in class. He likes school but sometimes
he would rather play on his computer.

One day in the middle of summer, his Mum
arrived home from work and was full of joy and
excitement. There was a draw held at her
work. The prize was a family trip to Banff
National Park in Canada. To her amazement she
had won the trip. It was the most exciting thing
that ever happened to them. They talked of
nothing else for the following weeks. Eventually,
they decided to put off taking the trip until the
following December. In Canada it snows a lot
and they could spend Christmas there in the
snow.

None of them had ever skied before, so his Mum
and Dad loved the idea of learning while in
Canada. They planned on all three of them
taking lessons. From that day on, Mum and
Dad saved as much money as possible for the
trip. In November Mum bought ski cloths for all
of them.
The summer months passed and finally the big
day in December arrived. They left home very
early in the morning while it was still dark, and
took a taxi to Cork Airport.

Kyle had been on a plane many times before
and loved flying. All three of them were
bubbling over with excitement. They took a
plane from Cork to London and then a very long
trip to Canada. It took a whole day to get
there. Kyle watched movies and ate lots of
snacks on the flight. He was thrilled that he
could have a fizzy drink any time he wanted.
Having fallen asleep for about 3 hours, the
plane was preparing to land when he woke up.
“Fasten your seat belts” announced the flight
attendant.

With the seat belt in place, Kyle felt that he
was flying the plane himself. “When I grow up
I will be a pilot”, he told his Dad.
On arriving in Calgary airport, they picked up
their bags and took a long bus trip to Banff
National Park. Tired but excited they arrived
at the Hotel. While his Mum was unpacking
the cases, Kyle watched the wonderful new
bright coloured cloths thrown on the bed.
They were special cloths to keep them nice and
warm while skiing.

Mum told him to try on his new snow suit.
Laughing, Kyle and his Dad put on their suits and
said that they felt like spacemen. Mum
explained that in the morning all three of them
were going to the mountains where they would
have ski lessons. Kyle asked many questions
about skiing and his Dad did the best he could to
answer. So it would be a new and wonderful
experience for all of them.

It was late in the evening when they finally
went down for dinner and walking through the
Hotel, Kyle thought it was the most beautiful
place he had ever seen. Standing in the
middle of the Lobby was a huge Christmas
tree. Lights hung from every window, and
Christmas music sounded from the ceiling.
They ate dinner and then took a walk outside.
There, in front of the Hotel was a beautiful
frozen lake with a castle made of ice in the
middle of it. People were skating around the
Castle, shouting, laughing and having fun.

Kyle sat on a bench with his Mum and Dad and
watched in wonder. It was very dark and his
Dad told him to look up at the sky. He was
stunned to see the whole sky covered with
billions of stars and the biggest moon he had
ever seen. He asked his Dad how come there
were so many stars in this sky and not in the
Cork sky. Dad explained that those stars are
in the sky in Cork also, but because we live in
a City with many lights, we cannot see them
very well.

After breakfast the next morning, all wrapped
up for the snow, they left the Hotel and joined
many others on a bus to the Ski Lodge. Kyle
spent a few hours at Ski school. Then with the
instructor satisfied with their progress, they
were ready to ski on the smaller slopes. Kyle
and his class mates slowly but surely started
skiing down the slope and though a little
scared, he managed very well to stay upright
on his skis. Sometime later, Mum and Dad
joined him to take him up on the Ski lift.

Each one holding a hand, all three of them
skied slowly down the mountain. Kyle was on
top of the world with delight. He then rejoined
the others in his class for the remainder of the
day. By the end of the day, he was able to ski
down by himself and was the proudest boy on
the mountain.
On the third night after dinner Mum, Dad and
Kyle went on a Sleigh ride around the frozen
lake.

The sleigh was pulled by 2 horses. There were
6 others on the sleigh but no young children. It
was very cold so they had blankets over their
legs to keep warm. In the pitch dark of the
night, Kyle’s eyes were drawn to the bright
stars in the sky. The big moon lit up the Ice
Caste in the middle of the Lake. People were
skating on the ice and there was Christmas
music playing over the microphones. On
reaching the opposite side of the lake they got
out and walked on the ice.

Being the only child with the group Kyle was a
little bored. While the adults were looking up
at the stars and sipping mulled Wine, they did
not notice Kyle wandering off. He stared up at
the sky while trying not to fall on the ice. He
wondered what animals lived in the dense
woods surrounding the lake. Then he heard it,
whispering sounds coming from the woods. He
looked in the direction of the sound and
thought he saw something moving in the trees.
He walked nearer the trees.

Then he heard it again, some whispering
sounds. He ventured nearer the trees and saw
something move. He heard what sounded like
laughter. Then a gruff voice saying, “eat, eat”.
Getting closer to the sounds, there, looking out
from the trees was the biggest brown Bear
imaginable. He was sitting down surrounded
by 3 small bears. The big bear was giving the
little ones food. On seeing Kyle the big bear
called out to him. “Hello young man, would
you like to join us”.

Kyle could not believe his ears. He was scared
but curious, so he took a few more steps
towards them. “Eat Kyle, we have to go soon,”
he heard. Kyle could not believe that the Bear
knew his name. Moving closer to them, he
asked the bear, “How do you know my name”.
“I don’t”, said the big bear. “But you called
me, I heard you” said Kyle. Come on over and
meet my boys, said the big Bear. The little
bears came towards him. Kyle was scared, but
thrilled to find such friendly animals.

He had never seen a real bear before. Then he
heard his Dads voice calling out to him. “I
have to go” he said, while carefully walking
back to the sleigh. He tried to tell his parents
what he had seen, but they were busy chatting
with the other people and dismissed his tale,
putting it down to his imagination.
Next day after breakfast they went to ski
again. This time Kyle went off with his ski
group.

They skied until lunch time, when the group
stopped for hot chocolate at the lodge.
Waiting for his chocolate to cool, Kyle went to
use the bathroom. The bathroom was next
door to the Lodge where all the rental ski
equipment was kept. On his way, from among
the trees he heard it....Boy, Boy. There, at the
edge of the woods, knee high in snow, were
the bears peeking out and calling to him. He
decided to go talk to them.
