"Iroquois Creation Myth"

There was an island floating in the sky,
including sky people who always got along and
always were happy. This island had a magical tree in the
center of the island that gave light to all the land.

One day the Sky Woman realized she was going to give birth to twins.
When she told her husband he was very angered and took his rage
out on the tree of light. Now instead of being a tree of
light there was a hole in the ground that showed the waters
and ground of Earth.

We'll save you!

The Sky Woman was curious about what was
down the hole and as she looked over the edge her
husband pushed her down into the hole. As she was
falling two birds noticed and came to her rescue.

The Sky Woman was safe and sound, but
she needed help. The animals were so friendly
and did everything they could to help her.
Little Toad came to help by bringing her mud from
the bottom of the sea.

The animals took the mud and covered the giant turtle
and created North America. Then the woman created
the glowing stars from sprinkling the dust in the air,
but she did not stop there. She continued to create the
Sun and the Moon.

Then the twins were born. The Sky Woman named
them Flint and Sapling. Sapling created the things in
life that were good, but then Flint created the evil things in life.

Sapling did not agree with the way his brother did things so
they started to battle. The two brothers fought until Sapling
won against Flint.

The Sky Woman and her son lived happily and peaceful with all the
animals of the land. Without the animal's help the Sky Woman would
not have been saved. This created the great respect between human
and animals.
