A Good Girl's Guide To Murder by Holly Jackson

Chapter 1
She couldn't wait, not for another second. Gwen got to meet her older sister after 4 years of college. She was going to pick up Mari from New Street station. She swiftly got dressed in her white crop top and blue denim jeans. Over that, a blue denim jacket as the weather was cold. She rushed downstairs to the empty kitchen, realising that breakfast wasn't made.
She and Mari lived alone with Hazel, their white pomeranian, in that tiny house painted in lavender and tiled roof. They were raised in an orphanage, having no idea who their parents were, and since nobody adopted them as they were growing up, they decided to move out with their hard-worked money.
Gwen made some delicious waffles and muffins along with mango juice for breakfast. She munched all the way,
wondering if her sister had changed after 4 years. Suddenly, her red-coloured iPhone 14 rang."Help me!", cried out a panicked voice. It was Mari. Then the line went dead. Gwen was on pins and needles. What was happening to her sister? Was someone gonna kidnap her? Was someone gonna murder her? No answer to that, but she had not even a second to waste. She stored her breakfast for later use and hopped in to her dark green jeep and set off to New
Street station. Nothing or no one but Mari was in her mind now.
Chapter 2
She couldn't help it. Gwen tried calling her sister. When there was no answer, she texted her,'Use your karate chops and stay intact. I'm on my way. Don't be afraid. xx '. Fear took over her body. She somehow understood that something was wrong. She reached the police but they were busy with something terrible that's going on.
Her sister is a karate master, the
classes Gwen refused to take. But she was trained by her own sister.
Finally, after a ten minute drive, she reached New Street station. Mari hadn't texted her sister which platform, so Gwen had to look. She soon caught the sight of the police handcuffing her sister. "What are you doing?! Let her go!" Gwen cried. Her brown wavy hair shook as she tried to stop her sister from being handcuffed but failed.
"Well then she shouldn't have done it," replied one of the officers. Gwen's pale skin went even more pale. Panicked thoughts instantly hit her head.
"Gwen, I swear! I didn't!"
Many thoughts hit her head. There is no way she did this.
One of the policemen explained, "She was caught on cams for murdering a blonde girl. The body is right over there
next to the train track. Everyone here has also witnessed it," Gwen looked at the passengers and they nodded. "She couldn't have done this," Gwen yelled, "I know my sister and this is practically impossible for her to do this." But nobody placed their ears on her. With tears in her eyes, Gwen watched her sister leave not for home, but for jail.
She rushed back inside her jeep. She
cried inside her car, hard. She drove straight home with little or no hope in her left. She didn't eat that night...
Chapter 3
During history class, she couldn't pay any attention at all. Fearful thoughts from yesterday occupied her mind. At least Mari kept ringing her that day but she had to text her,'Sorry, can't right now big sis. Maybe after school. xx'. She was picking up her biology books when caught the sight of a few drawings that were
placed by her locker. It was a drawing showcasing 'The brain of the school or the brain of a murderer?'.
Gwen had a big brain. She was one of the brightest and most popular girls in school.
It pissed her off so bad, she tore it up and took out her anger on her biology teacher. She wrote an apology letter afterwards. Her boyfriend, Tom, offered
to give her a ride home rubbing his black slick back hair, but she told that she already has her car waiting and thanked him. "Gwen, I want to tell you something," He called out. "Look I can't stand having a girlfriend whose sister murdere-". "MY SISTER DID NOT MURDER anyone!!!" She interrupted him, knowing exactly what he was going to say. She let him continue but you could still make out that the rage was slowly growing inside of her.
"Yeah so," He continued, "The point I'm trying to make is that...I wanna break up and you already know the reason." And he just left her there all stunned. "You just became the number one person in my enemy list" She then heard a voice. She turned to see a girl with red hair and violet eyes. "Don't worry bestie, I'm still here. You know that I will never leave you no matter what. Just ignore that stupid bitch. You're just too good for him. You don't deserve him at all,"
It was Lauren, her best friend since forever.
Her sister called up again. "What is it?" she asked.
Chapter 4
She hurried for Prison Thameside. There were just two words ringing in her mind, 'emergency' and 'sister'. The words the
police had told her over the phone. Once again, fear had taken over her body.
Cell 36. The cell in which Mari was there. Not anymore. The cell did no longer have Mari inside, it had Mari with blood flowing out of her stomach inside! Could anyone be more shocked
than her? No. Gwen lost the only family she had left.
Actually, the second last family. She still had Hazel with her.
She screamed. Loud enough for the streets to hear her sorrows.
Just then, her phone rang. It was a text from Lauren. She sent her a video of Tom and his new girlfriend, saying happy three months anniversary. It made her
red. She slipped the phone into her pocket and pretended like it was nothing. She screamed once again, this time even louder. She didn't care if anyone looked at her like she was mad. She just wanted her sister back.
Chapter 5
Her jeep was waiting for her. She stepped into her car with sorrows. She sped home to find the perfect black outfit. Gwen sent the video to Tom, insulted him and then, blocked him. He was a cheater, no wonder he has never responded to her texts or calls. She called her best friend in depression and told her everything, just so she had company during the funeral. She also
told Audrey about this.
Audrey was Clio's best friend ever since the both of them met in school during their first year. It was the time when Clio had no one but her sister. Audrey had blonde hair and green eyes. She was also pretty fair. Now Audrey teaches Mari chemistry as she did not take master's degree unlike Mari.
She knew the both of them would show
up, at least for her if not for Mari.
She drove straight home non-stop and scrambled through her wardrobe for her black outfit. She found it almost immediately.
Whoops...
She forgot about Hazel. That white pomeranian just sat there glaring her with sore eyes. Hazel knew it, didn't
she? She lifted up her pomeranian and set off.
Chapter 6
She switched on 'Maps'.
All of a sudden, she was the only one who could taste the unbelievable. How could a murderer be murdered? It didn't make sense to her.
She just left with thought triggering in her mind. Hazel sat in the seat next to her. She had her tongue stuck out, breathing heavily, still with sore eyes.
Soon enough, the both them reached the cemetery. News had already spread far wide by then. Audrey and Lauren were already there, waiting for them. Bella hugged them both really tight, so did Hazel. "Sorry about your sister," they said at the same time. She forgave them, even though she was feeling a bit of sickness inside.
Her situation with Tom made her really uncomfortable throughout the entire
process. She didn't know if she was okay just yet. She watched the priest perform the rite of committal with sore eyes, so did Hazel.
Bella, along with Hazel, stepped up to say a few words: "Hello, you probably know that I turn out to be her sister, just in the saddest version. I wish could turn time, you know. Unfortunately, time travel hasn't been invented yet, now has it? I am still
stubborn to turn time. Even though I know why I stand before you, I still don't accept the fact that my sister has passed away. It's such a tragedy. She was the star in our home. Even though we never knew who our parents were, she would always put a smile on our faces."
"I forgot to mention. This is our dog, Hazel. We had her since she was a tiny little puppy. She looked at me with sore eyes when I got home from the prison,
probably had already figured out what happened. She's a smart girl. She would always keep a smile on Mari's face. I loved to see that. I wish I could watch that happen again, but it's too late to say so. I couldn't bear seeing that knife. It was terrible."
"Sorry if this took longer than expected. I don't even know if I said enough but it's all I'd like to say right now. So...see you soon." Gwen
rushed towards Lauren and reached for her arms.
Audrey then stood before them to say a few words. "I too feel deep sorrow to see my best friend in ruins. But...I guess that's life. There's a start as well as an end. Thank you." Bella had given it a thought, 'They have been best friends for more than ten years straight. Why didn't she seem sad? Maybe it's just me being upset?'
Gwen must have been having a bad day anyway. There was no way she'd think ill of Audrey. Her death was probably traumatising her.
Chapter 7
She woke up to a glorious morning but felt the exact opposite. She still hadn't digested the whole situation, not yet. Gwen pulled a sickie just to get over with things. Hazel glanced at her with sore eyes.
The thought returned. Was this normal,
or was it intentional? Even if she was terrible condition, there was no chance of her giving up on her sister. In her pyjamas, she and Hazel drove to the police station.
Two hours of traffic. It drove her up the wall, like completely.
They didn't take the case. "Sorry ma'am but this was suicidal. I think it's pretty clear."
She went ballistic. How could they? And where was the evidence stating that it's suicidal? She could only see the truth, the only one who could. She took it.
Gwen slammed a paper and pen on her desk, but was completely clueless.
That evening, she drove to Audrey's. Who else could she talk to, besides Audrey and Lauren?
"Gwen?"
Nearly creeped out Audrey was. Gwen ran into her arms instantly. Audrey was puzzled, "Weren't you sick?". She laid it on a line...
Interview with Audrey Smith (Mari's best friend):
Gwen: Please describe the relationship between you and Mari.
Audrey: Huh?
Gwen: Just answer.
Audrey: Well it was peaceful. One or two fights but works out always.
Gwen: Anyway Mari said the same.
Audrey: Why did you even ask?
Gwen: No reason. Have you two ever performed the same actions
coincidently?
Audrey: Why are you being so weird?
Gwen: (glares)
Audrey: Ok ok. Not really is all I can say.
Gwen: Ok, we're good.
Chapter 8
She pulled a sickie to skip school the next day as well, played Audrey's recording non-stop.
'Why are you being so weird?'
There was something on her window, something unusual. She took a closer
look. Rotten Tomatoes?!
Then rotten eggs!
People were throwing stuff at her window. And they were all led by Tom, her ex-boyfriend!
She closed the curtains and contacted the university Mari went.
"Hello?", came a man's voice.
"Hey. I just wanted to speak about a student there named Mari. She's been there for four years," I replied. He told her something different. He told her, "Oh yeah. She almost never showed up in classes and whenever she did, she would seem scared and immediately after the bell rings, she would run out. I suspect it is to meet someone based on her behaviour. I'm sorry that I can't give you any more information right now so I'll talk to you later."
Then he hung up.
She was confused. Did she already know what was going to happen?
Chapter 9
What would Mari hide from her own sister?
Door bell rang.
"Mind if I stay here?"
It was Lauren.
Gwen was curious. "What brings you here?" she asked her. "Things are damn
crazy back at home," she replied,"And
besides, you do look like you could use some help." Lauren was not wrong. Gwen gave the windows a glance, then her soft-board. She told her best friend everything she knew, which was very little. An idea strikes Lauren. "We should totally check her suitcase." "You are brilliant," Gwen replied. They dragged Mari's heavy suitcase to the bedroom, which required a code to unlock.
But then Gwen smirked and knelt down to unlock it. "How'd you know?" Lauren asked, "I thought she doesn't tell anyone her password." "Please...", Gwen replied, "She's terrible at keeping secrets."
They hurriedly scrummaged through her suitcase and found something that blew their minds and drop jaws...
Chapter 10
"This is not possible." Gwen was going very pale. "There is no way. I have known my own sister for years and it just doesn't make sense when you think of her as a drug addict. I mean there is Rohypnol in her bag, how an...and why?!"
Lauren and Hazel dragged Gwen to the couch. Hazel had become Gwen's soft toy during the entire 'Goosebumps' movie.
Gwen and Lauren stayed up late pondering...
'What to do?'
'What do we do?'
That's when it hits Lauren.
After the weekend, they hauled Tom into an empty classroom and began their interrogation...
Interview with Tom Smith
(My Ex):
Gwen: Could you please explain why would
there be Rohypnol in your bag on
Friday 10th July 2026 and the next
day you disappear?
Tom: Mind your own business.
Lauren: Answer the fucking question!
Tom: Ok. Umm...My sister asked for them.
Gwen: You don't have a sister.
Tom: My first cousin. She wanted me to
rape your sister but I paid someone
Gwen: Why didn't you refuse?
Tom: She threatened me that she would
ruin my life and expose all my
secrets if I didn't do it.
Gwen: Who is your sister? I want name,
age, address everything.
Tom: I will write the info and give you.
Chapter 11
School didn't treat her better but Gwen did indeed manage to wing it. But at home, she was losing her mind.No one could cease her anger and frustration.
"Calm down," Lauren exclaimed, "We can just go ahead and interrogate Audrey. Would that make you feel better?" Gwen replied, "No, not yet. I want to dive deeper. We are going to America."
"How about we get more details on the rape first?" Now that got Gwen thinking...and that's exactly what they did indeed.
On Tuesday, they got more information...
