It was the beginning of fall as summer vacation came to an end. Most had mixed feelings
about being back in school. Some were excited about a new year of sports, dances, and
social activities while others just wanted a few more weeks worth of sleeping in. In a town of
people rushing back in forth trying to save on a deal, two friends, Spencer and Haley, sat on
a hill overlooking the town taking in the scene that lay before them. Spencer was a very
talkative person who loved to make friends and be supportive but had a tendency to let his
mouth run long enough to get him in some hot water, and while he could be seen as a
easygoing guy he knew when to take things seriously. Haley was outgoing too in her own
way. She wasn't a shy girl and she could be very outgoing given the opportunity, but she took
her time before opening up to people and while being quick to be at your side when you
need help, she was slow to accepting help with her problems. She was not someone to try
and intimidate. Both of them would be starting their Junior year at Stone Brook High School
but they didn't expect much to happen this year, but little did they know that they both would
learn the effects of not taking action against an injustice.

The first day of school started the usual way with heavy traffic as parents
driving their kids to school filled the roads and students scrambling around
trying to find their class schedules and meet up with old friends to trade
stories and gossip. All was normal as Spencer and Haley met up and
excitedly found out that they have the same second period English
together. They talked about their classes, what their college plans were, and
then talked about friends and family. As they were about to split off and head
to their classes the normal drone of noises from the students changed to an
atmosphere of concern and confusion as everyone's attention had turned to a
disturbance in the middle of a small crowd that had formed. Spencer and
Haley without hesitation nodded to each other and immediately tried to make
their way through the crowd and confusion to see what had a happened. As
they made their way to the front you could hear taunting and angry voices
targeted at someone. It didn't take long before you could hear a hard to
forget obnoxiously toned voice.
" What are you gonna do about, huh? you think you can take me you
wuss?"
said the character clearly causing the scene.
" Son of a gun" said Spencer to Haley. " Ryan Jordan is pushing Sampson
around".

Ryan Jordan was your not so original class bully. Probably felt bad about himself
so he uses whatever he has to his advantage to make others feel worse than
him. He's not the biggest of bullying brutes but he exploits his father's
presidency on the school board to his advantage. He thinks of himself as
untouchable and the staff's fear of his father doesn't help dilute his ego either.
No one's really met Mr.Jordan here but if he isn't anything like his father than
some apples do fall far from the tree. Not being too early in the year to start his
Inquisition of bullying he's decided to rough up Sampson as a little warm up to
start the year. Sampson being more bookish and slim doesn't stand as much
compared to Ryan.
" Looks like you made the fatal mistake of failing to look where your going punk"
Ryan says sharply at Sampson. " I'm sorry i bumped into you Ryan I didn-"
Sampson tried to say before being cut off. " That's Mr.Jordan to you dweeb. You
don't get to address me as anything else." He said angrily. " I think you need a
little lesson on respect". Ryan pushed Sampson to ground and prepared to hit
him when Spencer rushed in getting in between the two. " Back off of him Ryan "
said Spencer sternly". " Go away Spencer this hasn't anything to do with you,
you don't even know this twerp." said Ryan motioning to Sampson who was
slowly getting up from the ground. " I might not know him but I know you Ryan
and i know that you have no power compared to your dad yet you parade around
as if you run the world". said Spencer. " Watch your mouth Spencer, I'm not
afraid to sock you one". said Ryan trying to sound intimidating.

"Your just a big mouth and all those are good for is a fist"! said Ryan,
swinging his fist forward at Spencer. Spencer stepped to the side to
catching Ryan off guard as he completely missed his punch, tripping from his
own momentum and fell to the ground. The crowd was in awe to see
Spencer stand up to him and even more to make him trip. Ryan angrily
prepared to swing back when a staff member in with Haley. It was
Mr.Jenkins the English teacher and Mrs.Magg the school principal. Even
though through past history it was clear to see who had started the
incident Spencer and Sampson were sent to the principal's office.

As the two waited outside the office, Sampson thanked Spencer for stepping in
and standing up for him when no one else would. Spencer having a strong sense
for justice told Sampson he had no problem stepping in and that anyone should
do the same even if they don't know the outcome. " Sampson, courage isn't
doing something without fear, courage is doing something that has to be done
even when fear looks your right in the eye. Even if your not confident know that
you have more ability than you give yourself credit for". An hour later as the
second period bell was ringing Spencer walked into English class and sat next to
Haley. She was quite upset when Spencer explained how the principal gave him
detention for being involved in a fight and he was lectured while Ryan got of free
because of his Dad on the School Board. Knowing how unfair this was, Spencer
and Haley decided they needed to get the teachers and the principal to stop
Ryan's bullying.

Spencer and Haley talked to their parents about what to do. Their parents
realizing that this was a real issue tried to contact the school and talk to them
about taking action. For the most part their calls where left unanswered and
when they were able to reach someone they were either put on hold or told
that the issue was " being looked into and that they will get back to them as
soon as possible". As the days became weeks and Ryan's bullying had
ceased to stop it became quite clear that action was not going to be taken
against him.
