It all started on a road trip for the Conzo
family.
The mom and dad were in the front row,
with Jeremy and Brandon in the back row.

They were having a good time, looking
forward to their month-long vacation to the
Rocky Mountains. The boys in the back were
playing games, while the adults shared their
excitement of what they would do first.

"Here you go, guys." Mom passed back some
snacks. "Dig in."
Brandon examined his apple, which looked
delicious. He took a bite, and he immediately
knew something was wrong. He tried to say
something to Jeremy, his parents, anyone, but
he couldn't speak!

His mouth felt dry, and he felt helpless.
However, he was still able to make noises.
"Mblakdjfl!" he said to Jeremy.
Jeremy looked at him goofily. "C'mon,
brother, I know you're joking."

Brandon made a gesture, as if he were
writing. Fortunately, Jeremy understood and
grabbed a pen and paper. Brandon wrote in
big letters, "HELP! I LOST MY VOICE! TELL
MOM AND DAD!"

Jeremy said,"Whatever you say-I mean
write!" and then transferred the news on to
Mom and Dad. They turned around and looked
confused, then made eye contact with
Brandon.
Brandon wrote on the page,"I'M NOT SURE
WHAT HAPPENED. COULD YOU GET OFF THE
HIGHWAY AND I'LL WRITE MORE ABOUT IT?"

Once they got off of the highway, they pulled
into a McDonald's parking lot, and they figured
it out. In the next fifteen minutes, they all took
a vote and decided that they would be heading
back to home in Topeka, Kansas.

They got home, and suddenly Brandon never
felt so mad at himself. They had missed a
month of vacation just because of an apple!
And it was all because he took one bite of it.

Just then, he remembered it. In the
confusion of the last two hours, he'd forgotten
all about it and why he had lost his voice.

He ran out to the car and grabbed it. He
brought it back in, and got his family's
attention. He wrote on a loose leaf piece of
paper:

TO TELL YOU
THIS APPLE
WAS EATEN
RIGHT BEFORE
THIS
INCIDENT.

No one had a large reaction, or seemed
surprised.
Brandon thinking: I guess people eat apples
every day and then lose their voice.

The next few days were they strangest of
Brandon's life. It seemed that every two hours,
he was being rushed to or from the hospital,
and that both Mom and Dad were taking off
work.

Brandon was glad for the treatment,
unhappy for the attention. Someone was
always fussing over him, and he was at least
glad to see relatives he hardly even knew.
Except, he was tired of filling blank sheets of
paper with writing that would (hopefully)
someday be useless.

One day, he was so exhausted, he just went
to sleep. It was a sad, slow moving dream,
about a boy whose dad had fought in
Afghanistan and died, and he had no living
relatives left. He went out in search for help,
and with no success, he just sat down and
cried.......

But then he realized that the crying wasn't in
his dream. It was coming from something else,
something that actually existed....

....then he woke up and found that the
sounds were coming from his mom, who was
weeping in a rocking chair, moaning over and
over.

He shouted,"Mrglewrgle!" as loud as he
could to get her attention. She looked up, and
tossed a pencil and paper in his direction. He
had been like this long enough that whenever
he made a sound, he needed something, and
to tell them what, that required those items.

He wrote in big letters, "WHAT'S WRONG?"
She replied,"The doctor said it's going to
take a miracle for you to ever get your voice
back! NOOOOOOOO!" And she went into
another meltdown.

Just then, the doctor came in.
"Change of plans, guys," he said. "We think
we found a cure."
He then explained what they needed to do.

He said that it would be really difficult,
before anything else.

But then Brandon found out what they
needed to do.

They needed to find an apple.

Except it couldn't be just any apple.

It would need to be a very similar version of
the apple that Brandon had eaten to make him
lose his voice.

It needed to come from the same company,
have the same sticker, anything like that.

When this was all confirmed, Brandon would
take a bite. Then, he would be his old self.
