When I was born, my heart 

wasn't connected to my lungs. I 

had surgery to connect the vein 

to my lungs. This surgery was 

called a TAPVR (Total Anomalous 

Pulmonary Venous Return) 

Repair. This created some scar 

tissue in my lungs.

When I was about a year and a half 

old, I got RSV. RSV (Respiratory 

Syncytial Virus) is a common virus 

that a lot of children get. It is a 

virus that happens in the lungs. It 

can get bad for kids who have heart 

and lung problems. But that doesn't 

mean you have asthma.

After a week or two it got worse and I was 

hospitalized in January. Although I had RSV 

I still did not have a history of asthma. And 

then I was intubated. That means I got a 

tube down my throat to help me breathe. I 

also had a tracheostomy. I was not even 

two years old so I ripped it out and showed 

it to the nurses. That's how I got that big 

scar on my neck.

 I was in the hospital for three 

months. I was really sick. I was 

on a lot of medicine when I got 

out. I got out of the hospital in 

March, right before my second 

birthday. I was on about eight 

medications that also helped 

with my heart.

And then on the day of my first Show 

and Tell in kindergarten I told my mom I 

was not feeling too well. She said I just 

had a frog in my throat. But after school 

I still did not feel well. She took me to 

the emergency room and it was hours 

until we got results. The doctor said I 

needed to be hospitalized. My mom 

said, "Do it."
