What is the United States Constitution of the United States?
The Constitution tells you the basic laws and rights of
people. It was signed on September 17, 1787.

There are seven articles and twenty seven
amendments that make up the Constitution. The
Articles explain the different parts of the
Constitution. The Amendments are basic rights of
the people of the United States.

The Preamble of the Constitution introduces the
origin (where it was wrote), and the purpose. "We,
the people of the United States" is the first line of
the Preamble. The purpose of the Constitution was
to form a better country and secure the rights of
the people who lived there.

The second part of the Constitution is called the
Articles of Confederation, which was the first
governing document of the United States. Under
the Articles of Confederation the United States was
weak and the states operated as if they were all
their own country.

The third part of the Constitution is called the Bill
of Rights which gives people certain freedoms and
rights that puts limits on what the government can
control. There are ten amendments in the Bill of
rights.

On May 25 1787 the Constitutional Convention
opened in Philadelphia at the Pennsylvania State
House. There were 55 people there to represent
the 13 states, except for Rhode Island.

At age 81 Benjamin Franklin was the oldest at the
convention. Thomas Jefferson, Samuel Adams,
John Adams, John Hancock and Patrick Henry were
all absent from the convention. Patrick Henry was
invited but he did not go because he did not want
to give the government more power than they had.

After a long discussion that took place in the
summer of 1787 the three branches of the
government were created. These branches are the
Executive, Legislative and Judicial.

The Legislative branch makes the laws of the
United States. This branch is split into two parts
which are the Senate and House of
Representatives. Each state has two Senators that
serve a six year term. The House of
Representatives has 435 people. The number of
Representatives for a state depends on how many
people live in that state.

The Executive branch enforce the laws. This branch
is split into three parts. The President, Vice
President and Cabinet Members. The President is
the boss of the United States, Vice President
supports the President, and the Cabinet Members
are chosen by the President and must be approved
by the Senate.

The Judicial branch evaluates the laws. The court
system is what makes up this branch. The
Supreme Court is the highest court in the country.
9 judges are chosen by the President and must be
approved by the Senate.
