Chapter 1
The sun was peaking through Harmony's dusty, moth-bitten shutters. Harmony was in bed, not nessasaraly sleeping, just dozing, one of her eyes open, staring blankly at the ceiling, as if it knew everything. She smelled burning.
"Great," She muttered. "Just great." She opened her other eye and flopped out of bed, opening the shutters with a cough. She really needed to dust in here. "First day of school, and Hunter's trying to burn down the house." She srugged into her school coloths, and combed through her matted black hair. Once she got her hair under control, she pulled it into a messy bun. She opened her door, and walked out into the dimly lit halway. She walked down to the room next to hers.
On the door, there was a piece of paper that said, "Crystal's room" with green vines drawn on it. Harmony knocked on the door and stepped in the room.
"Crystal? You ready or-woah." The room was a mess, there where gardening books strewn all over the floor, clothes on bookshelves, and it seemed to Harmony that everything had decided to swich places.
"Oh good!" Crystal said in relife, running to Harmony. "I just can't seem to find my backpack!" She said, a nervos smile on her face.
"I'll find it." Harmony sighed, handing Crystal her school clothes. "You go change and eat. I'll be down in a sec."
"OK! Obrigada! Thanks! Your a lifesaver!" Crystal said, taking her clothes and giving Harmony a quick hug.
"Did someone say Lifesaver?" James asked, peaking his head into Crystal's room. "I'm hungry." He added, his stomach growling, as if agreeing with him.
"I don't have any candy." Harmony huffed as she put things right again, looking for Crystal's bag. "I think Hunter's making something."
"He can't cook!" James whined, taking a book from a shelf, flipping through it, then tossing it to the ground.
"Go make yourself something then!" Harmony said, picking up the book and placing it back on he shelf. "Ah-HA!" She said triumphantly, pulling the backpack from beneath Crystal's mattress.
"Great! Just in time!" Crystal said, stepping out of the bathroom,
skipping over to Harmony and taking the bag from her. "I'm glad you found it! I put it there so I would remember it!" She said as she ran out the door. Harmony smiled and shook her head. Kids. She thought as she walked downstairs.
Chapter 2
Harmony walked into the kitchen to see the toaster smoking and two pecies of charcould toast sitting on a plate on the counter.
"What the heck happened here?" Harmony asked, grabbing the black toast and throuing it in the garbage.
"I don't know!" Hunter said defensively, staring daggers at the toaster. "I touched it, and it just burned!"
"Whatever." Harmony sighed, taking two new pieces of bread and putting them in the old toaster. She grabbed an apple from the fruit platter next to her and tossed it to Hunter. "Eat that. I'll make you some toast you can digest."
"Thanks." Hunter mumbled, caching the apple and sitting down at the old dusty wood table with King, James, and Crystal.
"It's obrigada." Crystal corrected him, taking a bite of her banana. "And Harmony?"
"Yeah?" Harmony said, buttering the toast.
"Can we grow a bannana tree?" Crytal asked.
"Uh, I don't know." Harmony said, handing the toast to Hunter. "You're already trying to grow a blueberry bush." Crystal was obsessed with gardening and growing things. "And plus, it's really hard to grow banana trees and tropical stuff like that in California."
"Oh. OK." Crystal said. Her smile dimming.
"Sorry." Harmony said, poring herself a bowl of cereal. "Maybe you could ask Ms. London if you can try to grow one at school? You're her best student, and she LOVES growing new things."
"OK! Good idea!" Crystal said, her smile brightening again.
After they finished breakfast, they walked to the front door.
"OK, let's go! Oh wait-" Harmony said, bounding up the stairs.
"What are you doing?" King asked. "Did you forget something?" He asked.
"Almost!" Harmony called from her room. "I almost forgot my guitar!" She said, running back down the stairs, taking three at a time.
"Isso já é um começo!" Crystal said.
"Translation, please." James said.
"Most of us don't speak Portuguese." Hunter said.
"Oh! Sorry! I said, 'That's a start!'" Crystal said. She knew how to speak Portuguese and English, and sometimes, she accidentally said things in Portuguese.
"If you could say it in Korean, that would be better." Harmony said as they walked out the door.
"You know the rest of us can't speak ANY other languages." King said.
"But you'll need to learn another language sometime." Harmony said, as they walked down the hot sidewalk.
"I'll probably just learn Spanish or something easy." James said.
"Learning another language is not easy." Harmony said. "And it never is."
"Unless you're parents spoke it around you when you where a little--oh. Sorry." Crystal said, looking at her shoes. They where all orphans, and most of them didn't want to remember they're parents.
"No, Crystal, it's fine." Harmony said, forcing a smile, even though memory's of her parents where flooding back into her mind. "You didn't mean to say that."
"Sim. Enfim, onde estávamos?" Crystal said, looking up again, her ever present smile back. "Oops. Sorry." She said, looking at the expression on King's face. "I said, 'Yeah. Anyway, where were we?'"
"We where talking about how learning a new language is easy." James said, grinning.
"No, we where talking about how learning a new language is NOT easy." Harmony said back. On the rest of the way to school, they argued over what they where talking about, laughing and grinning the whole time.
Chapter 3
"Sorry I'm late." Harmony said as she ran into her Korean teacher's classroom.
"다 괜찮아요." Her teacher, Ms. Rose, said, gestering for her to take a seat.
"감사합니다." Harmony said, sitting down.
"야!" The girl sitting next to Harmony said. "I've never heard anyone that fluent before!"
"Thanks." Harmony said in English. "I guess it just comes naturaly."
"I wish it came naturaly to me." The girl said. "I'm Xavier, by the way."
"Nice to meet you." Harmony said, smiling.
"Like, I know the language, but I can't speak it that well." Xavier said, leaning back in her chair.
"OK, class. Settle down." Ms. Rose said, taking a seat at her desk. "Today is the exam, so I hope you studied." She said, taking papers out of a draw in her desk. "Harmony, could you please pass these out to everyone?"
"물론." Harmony said, standing up and taking the papers from her, and walking around the room to pass them out.
Chapter 4
After her Korean class, Harmony walked out of the classroom towards the cafeteria for lunch. Harmony walked through the open doors that led into the loud, full of chatter lunchroom. Harmony crept to the corner where she usually sat. She sat down and plopped her backpack down next to her. She took out her lunch; an apple, and a peanut butter and grape jelly sandwich. She took ate the sandwich and then she put the apple back in her bag. She unstrapped her guitar from her back, which is where it had been all morning. Her guitar was an old thing, the dark blue paint was peeling off the sides, and some of the metal on it was rusted. But Harmony still loved it, and it still had good sound. She started to play.
She didn't play a song, she just plucked the strings, until it felt as though the whole world had muted. After what felt like moments later, the second period bell rang.
Chapter 5
Harmony starpped her giraur on to her back agian, and snuck through the stampeed of kids flouding out the door. She caght Crystal right outside the doors.
"What class are you going to now?" Harmony asked, pulling her aside, out of the way of the doors.
"Gardning," She said. "you?"
"Band." Harmony answered.
"OK! Have fun! Bye!" Crystal said, walking towards the gardens.
Harmony waved goodbye and walked to the band room.
"Ah, Harmony! We were just talking about you!" The band teacher, Mr. Lucas, said cheerfully as she walked in.
"No, we were talking about us doing a harmony." Someone holding a violin said.
"Exsactly!" Mr. Lucas said, becaning Harmony to sit down. "Today, Harmony," Mr. Lucas said as she sat down and got out her gitaur. "You are going to sing for us!" Harmony froze in the middle of tuning the gitaur. It made a resenful twang as she tighted it.
"I don't know about that." Harmony said. "I don't really like singing in front of--"
"Nonsense!" Mr. Lucas said, handing her a mic. "Your voice is incredible! Sing, sing, sing!" He said, claping.
"Um, OK." Harmony said. She played a few notes. She hummed, warming up her voice, and pulling in everyone. Pepole stopped talking and turned. Harmony's voice echoed through
entire room. She played a haunting, sweet melody. She started singing.
"The sun’s breaking through the moth-bitten dust
A house full of secrets, a house full of trust
We’re walking the sidewalk, the pavement is hot
But we’re finding a magic that the world forgot
I’ve got my guitar and a rhythm to keep
Awaking a power that’s been fast asleep.
Fast asleep!"
Harmony sung into the mic, her voice exploding into a high note no one had ever hit before. A glass of water on the piano shook, making the water ripple. The room went dead silent.
Chapter 6
In gardening class, Crystal was planting a small sapling in the soil. She was humming, a smile on her face. She loved the smell of fresh dirt. She finished planting, and sat back to admire her work. She closed her eyes, and took in a deep breath. A small, peaceful smile appeared on her lips. The ground rumbled, and Crystal's eyes shot open. The small sapling she had just planted had somehow grown into a huge oak tree.
“What. The. HECK?!?” Crystal yelled, standing up and running to her teacher.
Chapter 7
In King's class, King was sitting in the back row of desks in the classroom. King was slouched on his desk, he was trying to pay attention to the teacher, but his mind kept wandering off. He started absentmindedly fiddling with the watch on his wrist. There was a loud, bong like a bell going off miles underwater. The whole class froze, all except King. He sat there, unsure of what to do, until there was a sharp tick--like a clock ticking--and the room started again, and nobody seemed to notice they had just frozen in time, and the whole rest of the class, King staired at his watch.
Chapter 8
James was hunched over a dead circuit. He had completed it, but the battery wasn't working. James asked the teacher if there were more batteries, but the teacher had said, no, and that these where the last ones. James huffed, and reached to take the battery out. As soon as his finger touched the battery, the circuit roared to life, electricity running through the metal, and thoughts running through James's head at the speed of light.
Chapter 9
In Hunter's class, he was supposed to be lighting a candle without a match or a lighter.
"Ugh," Hunter huffed, annoyed. "Why won't you--UGH!" His frustration bubbled up, and he glared at the candle stick. "Just... LIGHT already!" He yelled. The wick of the candle burst into flames.
Chapter 10
After the rest of a school day the felt like it would last forever, the five met up at the front of the school that they always met up at at the end of the school day. But today, the air was different. When they finally where all there, they all burst out.
"Something REALLY weird happened today!"
The all stopped and looked at each other, there faces a mix of wonder, fear, and curiosity. Then, after a moment, they all started talking.
"It practically burned down my desk--"
"SUPER tall--"
"My watch--"
"The room literally vibrated--"
"STOP!" James yelled. Everyone stopped talking. "Much better. Harmony, you start. What happened to you?"
"I was in band class, and Mr. Lucas wanted me to sing for everyone." Harmony said as they walked down the sidewalk. "So I did. And I hit a really high note that nobody had hit before, and that I've never hit before."
"I was in gardening class, and I was outside near the playground planting a tree sapling, and when I finished, I closed my eyes for like, ten seconds, and then I the ground rumbled, and the sapling I had just planted was a HUGE oak tree!" Crystal said, pointing to the oak tree as they passed the playground. "That one! That was the one I planted!" As she pointed at it, vines grew and snaked up the trunk.
"I was bored to death in my class," Said King, watching his
watch out of the corner of his eye. "and without even thinking, I just started fidgeting with my watch. And then," He said, still watching his watch like it might explode. "Time literally stopped. For five seconds, time froze. All of the class, except me. And then it just returned to normal, and nobody noticed."
"In my class, I was supposed to light a candle without using a match or a lighter." Hunter said. "And I couldn't figure it out. It was so frustrating!" The homework Hunter was holding burst into flames. Hunter yelped, but the fire touched him, and it didn't hurt or even leave a mark. Hunter dropped the paper and stomped on it.
"I was making a circuit in my class, and the battery was dead, and we did have any other batteries." James said as they
continued walking. "And when I touched the battery, the circuit just started working. Even without me turning it on!"
"OK. This is really weird." Harmony said as their house loomed into veiw. "OK. Just don't tell anyone, got it?" Harmony said. Everyone nodded. "And also, Crystal, be carful where you point your hands."
"Entendi." Crystal said, nodding. "Got it."
"And, Hunter?" Harmony asked, thinking everything through. "Try to control your emotions."
"OK." Hunter sighed.
Everyone went to bed with no dinner, and all night, Harmony gazed out the grimy window, playing her guitar quietly.
Chapter 11
The next morning, Harmony was woken up by Crystal loudly whispering to be qiute.
"What is it?" Harmony asked rubbing the sleep from her eyes. "You can come in."
"Umm...Você pode querer vir dar uma olhada no meu quarto." Crystal said quicly, figiting nervosly. "You might want to come and look at my room."
"OK. Coming. Go eat something I'll be there." Harmony said, standing up, yawning.
"OK." Crystal said, walking down the hallway.
Harmony shut her door and changed out of her school cloths that she wore to bed. She brushed her teeth and walked out into
the hallway.
"Crystal, I'm ready!" Harmony called to her.
"OK! Coming!" She called back. She dashed up the stairs, meeting Harmony at the top, and leading her to her room. "Now, please don't freak out..." Crystal said as she opened her door for Harmony to see Crystal's room. Harmony's jaw dopped. The room was covered in plants. The bookshelves had vines all over them, the bedframe had flowers growing on it, and almost everything in Crystal's room now had plants growing on it.
"Sorry." Crystal mumbled.
"No, Crystal, it's all good." Harmony said. "You wanted to redecorate your room anyway, and the plants will keep the air nice and fresh.
"You're not upset?" Crystal asked, her face brightening.
"Nope. Not even remotly." Said Harmony. "We might as well use these weird powers or whatever we have to our advantage." She said, walking downstairs with Crystal behind her. "And plus, you'll probably be able to grow that banana tree you wanted. And help the blueberry bush. And grow more fruits and vegetables so we won't have to buy them."
"Really? Oh, thank you, thank you, thank you!" Crystal squealed excitedly, hugging her.
"No prob-wait. What is that smell?" Harmony ask to no one. She smelled something burning. "Oh, no...not again." She mumbled, dashing into the kitchen.
Smoke was billowing out from the toaster, and Hunter was in a corner of the kitchen, trying to calm down. He saw Harmony, and dashed over to her.
"Harmony!" He yelled. "I'm sorry, I tried to stay calm, but it's really hard--"
"Hey, Hunter, it's OK." Harmony said, grabbing an empty plate and fanning the smoke. "It's hard to control your emotions, I get it. Crystal, can you try to grow strawberries in that pot over there?"
"Sure! Might as well get some practice in." Crystal closed her eyes, her eyebrows creasing in concentration. The dirt in the pot wiggled, and a small green leaf popped out of the soil. The leaf grew, and a few seconds later, a strawberry bush was inside the pot, big, juicy strawberries hanging from the plant, like ordiments on a Christmas tree.
"Wow! Nicely done!" Harmony cheered, walking over to Crystal and giving her a pat on the shoulder.
"How did you do that?!" James asked from the table.
"I don't acually know." Crystal said, smiling proudly. "I guess I just thought about a strawberry bush and it growing, and it just grew."
"I've been trying all morning to get the living room lights to turn on without me flipping the switch, and it didn't work even once, and your just coming over and redecorating your room and growing bushes!" James said, smiling and picking some straberrys.
"Yeah. I've been trying to make a water drop stop, and all I've done is fill a whole bucket!" King said, taking a strawberry from James.
"Are we going to go to school today, Harmony?" Hunter asked.
"Um, I don't think so." Harmony said. "We don't know how to
control these powers we have yet, and we don't want to do something to the school of our friends."
"Yeah, I don't want to set my friends of teachers on fire!" Hunter said, a relived look on his face.
Just then, the toast in the toaster finished. The toaster made a pwang noise, and Harmony jumped in suprize. Harmony's guitar, which she had brought downstairs and set on a chair, made a high surprised twang.
"Um, Harmony?" Crystal asked, eyeing the guitar. "Did your guitar just play on it's own?"
"Yes?" Harmony said, walking to her guitar and picking it up. "Can I play it with my mind?"
"Maybe? Try it. Think about playing notes in your head, and maybe the guitar will play on it's own?" King said helpfully.
"I'll give it a shot." Harmony said. She closed her eyes and imagined playing her guitar in her head. The guitar played the notes she was imagining playing. "Whoa!" Harmony said, grinning.
"That's awesome!" Crystal cheered, her moth full of strawberries.
"Yeah, it is," King agreed. "Now help me freeze time!"
Chapter 12
The rest of the day, they worked on controling and using their powers. King had sucsesfully frozen time multipul times, and now was using it to his advantage.
"If you freeze me sneezing one more time..." Harmony said to him as he laughed at the picture he had gotten of her sneezing.
"I'm going to make an album with these in it and name it, 'Harmony's allergies!'" King laughed. The light in the living room flickered in and out and then turned off.
"Ah-ha!" James cheered, pumping his fist in the air.
"You all have done something with you're powers," Hunter said from the kitchen table, looking at the pineapple Crystal had just sucseffully grown in about a minute. "And I can't even light a
candel." He said.
"Wait," King said, standing up and walking over to Hunter. "Here. Look at these." He showed Hunter the pictures of Harmony sneezing. Hunter laughed, and a small flame appeared at the end of his pointer finger. "Nice! I knew it would work!"
"You did?" Hunter asked, lighting the candle with a proud grin.
"Yes. OK, maybe." King admitted. "About fifty percent."
Chapter 13
Late that night, there was a loud knock on the door. Harmony sprang up in bed, wide awake.
"Who in the world would be here at 3 AM in the morning?" She muttered as she grabbed her guitar and opened her door. She walked into the hallway and found King, Hunter, Crystal, and James peering out of their doors.
"What's going on?" Crystal asked Harmony, stepping out of her room.
"Yeah, who is it?" King, James, and Hunter asked, joining them.
"I have no idea." Harmony said as they tiptoed downstairs. "Just get ready." Hunter made balls of fire appear in his hands, King readyed his watch, James's hands sparked, and Crystal
made a small spiked, leafy spear. Harmony nodded at each of them and they nodded, and Harmony unlocked the heavy door and opened it.
Chapter 14
A tall figure in a long, billowing cape stood there.
"Who are you?" Harmony asked, her fingers hovering over the strings on her guitar.
"I come in peace." The hooded figure said in a soft, kind women's voice. "There's no need to get violent. I know about you're magic."
"Magic?" Harmony asked, her hands dropping. "That's what we have?"
"Yes." The hooded figure replied. "And if you come with me, you can learn how to control it and use it."
"We already know how to use it." Hunter said.
"You do not know all of it's uses and abilities." The figure said.
"If we did come with you, where would you take us?" Crystal asked.
"To a different world where magic is common." The figure replied. "In other words, I am taking you to a Magic Academy."
"Cool!" King said, taking his hand off his watch. "Harmony, can we go? It's better than this place."
"Yeah, can we?" Crystal asked as well, making her spear disappear. "I think it could be good, too."
"It will be good." The figure said.
"OK, I guess we can come with you." Harmony said after a moment of thought.
"Good. Go gather you're belongings." The figure said.
"Wait," James said as everyone walked into the house. "We'll never come back here?"
"Probly." The figure replied. "You will be living at the Academy. All the students do."
"OK." James said walking into the house.
"Does that mean that all the students are orphans?" Harmony asked.
"You're questions will be answered in time." The figure answered. "Go back you're things. We need to leave soon."
"Got it..." Harmony said, walking inside the house and thinking.
Chapter 15
After ten minutes, they all stood at the front of the house with their backpacks full of clothes and other items.
"How are we going to get there?" Crystal asked the figure.
"Magic." The figure replied shortly.
"Yeah, duh, Crystal." King said. Harmony shot him a disapproving look.
"Shh, watch." James whispered. The hooded figure reached a hand into a deep pocket in the cape. They pulled out a blue, glowing crystal orb and threw it onto the ground and whispered something. The orb shattered and glowing blue luminescent gas rose from the broken glass. The gas rose into the air and made a large ring. The figure muttered something again and the gas
flashed and the inside of the ring glowed a holy blue light.
"Step inside the portal." The figure said. James stepped forward and stepped into the portal. He disappeared. "Next!" Crystal stepped in and disappeared as well. King stepped into the portal and disappeared shouting, "Whoo-hoo!" Hunter gulped and stepped in and disappeared out of sight. Harmony squared her shoulders, closed her eyes and stepped into the portal.
Chapter 16
Harmony opened her eyes again and found herself standing in front of huge oak doors with patters of flowers, birds, and dragons carved into it.
"Onde estamos?" Crystal asked in awe, gazing up at the doors.
"Magic Academy." Harmony whispered. The hooded figure walked to the doors and knocked on them. A second later, the doors opened and somebody stepped outside.
"Xavier?!" Harmony gasped.
"Harmony!" Xavier said, running to her. "You're Magic too?"
"Yes! I am!" Harmony said, grinning. "What type of Magic do you have?"
"I have the power to copy anyone's Magic!" Xavier said.
"You two know each other?" Crystal asked.
"Oh-right-sorry," Harmony said. "Xavier, this is King, James, Crystal, and Hunter. Guys, this is Xavier. She's from my Korean class at school."
"Nice to meet you!" Crystal said.
"Please show them to their rooms, Xavier." The hooded figure said.
"Yes, Mestra Luna." Xavier said. She becond to them. "Common, guys. Follow me, I'll show you you're rooms."
She lead them inside, up flights of marble stairs, through lamp-lit hallways and wide windows with fluffy pillows and chairs, and finally, she led them to a hallway with five doors with each of their names engraved on the door.
"All of the doors are enchanted to only let in the person that
own the room." Xavier explained.
"So who can get in other than us?" Hunter asked.
"You, if you want to bring someone in with you, you can, and some of the Masters and Mestra's can also come in you're room."
"Cool." King said as he opened his door and peered in the room.
"Awesome!" Crystal said as she walked into her room. "It's got a garden in here!"
"Whoa." Harmony said, opening her door. It was full of microphones, amps, guitars, and there where sets of headphones on the walls. Posters of Harmony's favorite singers where hung on the walls as well. There was a large soundboard on the left wall. There was a wooden desk in a corner of the vast room, and there was also high bookshelves on the wall.
There was a bed with a wooden frame in front of a huge window that took up a whole side of the far-end of the room, looking down upon the rest of the vast academy. "Hey, Xavier, you wanna look at my room before you go back to bed?"
"Sure, I guess." She walked into Harmony's room. "Oh. My. Gosh." She moved in a circle, taking in everything. "Wow, Harmony."
"I'm glad you like it." Harmony laughed. "Well, I'm guessing you like it."
"Uh, yeah, of course I like it!" Xavier said, walking out of the room. "Goodnight everyone!" She called as she walked back to the stairs. "I'll wake you up in the morning and show you to you're classes!"
Harmony put her backpack down on her desk and slid under
the covers in her bed and immediately fell asleep.
Chapter 17
Harmony woke to the sound of someone loudly banging on her door.
"Oh, Harmony!" Xavier yelled from the other side of the door. "Breakfast starts in twenty minutes!" Harmony slumped out of bed and opened her door. "Great, your awake!" Xavier said, smiling. "Change into new clothes, brush you're teeth, comb your hair, and meet me outside your door." Xavier said.
"OK." Harmony muttered sleepily. She closed the door as Xavier walked to Crystal's door and banged on it, calling her name. Harmony did what Xavier had told her to do, and when she was done, she walked into the hallway, where Xavier was standing, with the others standing beside her.
"Great!" Xavier said as she stepped out of her room. "Follow me!" She walked down the staircase and through a hallway bustling with students, all walking in the same derection. Xavier called out to a few students passing. "Hey, Elsa! Lucky!"
"Hey, Xavier." The girl named Elsa said, walking over to her. "New students?"
"Yeah, just arrived here last night." Xavier answered. "How are you doing, Lucky?"
"Good." Lucky answered. "What are you're names?" She asked them.
"I'm Harmony. That's Crystal, King, James, and Hunter."
"What powers do you guys have?" Elsa asked as they walked down more flights of marble stairs.
"They don't know yet." Xavier answered helpfully. "Their going
to get tested today."
"Tested?" Harmony asked.
"Tested." Xavier repeated. "The teachers are going to ask you questions about yourself and you answer."
"OK..." Harmony said, not fully understanding.
"It's really short." Lucky reasured them. "They'll test you and then you're free for the rest of the day."
"We're here!" Xavier said as they stepped into a vast room, lit with torches on the walls. There where tables near the walls where food sat on golden platters. There where huge wooden tables that filled up the middle of the room, where students sat, eating and talking happily. "Over here." Xavier said, leading them over to a long line of students and standing at the end of the line.
"What powers do you have?" Harmony asked Elsa and Lucky as they waited.
"I have the power to understand animals." Elsa said.
"That's awesome!" Crystal said, grinning.
"My power is if I draw something, I can touch it and it becomes real." Lucky said. "Like, I can draw a sword, and I touch the drawing, and the sword I drew appears in my hand."
"Wow." King said, talking for the first time. "That's cool."
"It is." Lucky agreed, handing each of them a golden plate. "That's why I always carry around my drawing tools." She showed them a small leather pouch attached to her belt with pencils, markers, oil pastels, and charcoals.
"You should see Harmony's room." Xavier said as the line moved and they served themselves to the food. "She's got tons
of music stuff in there!"
"Nice." Elsa said, grabbing an apple and taking a bite. "If you need a backup singer, just ask Xavier."
"Why?" Hunter asked, scoping oatmeal onto his plate.
"Because I have the power to copy anyone's power!" Xavier answered, smiling.
"So, you have the copycat power?" King asked.
"Yup!" Xavier said, leading them over to a table. "Hey, guys! Look, we've got new students!" She called to the people sitting at the table. They all turned to her.
"I'll introduce everyone." Elsa said. She pointed at the person sitting closest to her and went down the table. "The boy with a mouthful of toast is Jake, the boy glaring at me is Gunner, the girl that's trying to distract me is Stellar, and the boy at the end is
Kal." Elsa finished, sitting next to Stellar.
"Hi, I'm Harmony, and this is Crystal, James, Hunter, and King." Harmony said, sitting down.
"What are your powers?" Crystal asked, setting down her plate and sitting next to Harmony.
"I have the power of teleportation." Jake said, swallowing his toast.
"I've got the power to become a shadow." Gunner said, looking back down at his food.
"I have the power of water." Stellar said, taking a bite of her eggs.
"And I have the power to turn into anyone I've seen." Kal said, poking his food with his fork.
"Stop playing with your food." Elsa said to him, waving away his
fork with her butterknife.
"But I'm not hungry!" Kal said, smacking her hand.
"Siblings?" Harmony asked Xavier as Elsa and Kal continued to retort.
"Yeah." Xavier said, giggling. "Elsa's his older sister."
"Kal, Elsa, stop your nonsense before you start a mad food-fight." Mestra Luna said as she walked by their table. She didn't have her cloak on and her long, flowing brown-graying hair was down and over her sholders.
"Yes, ma'am." Kal said, smacking Elsa one more time for good mesure.
"I told you we would get in trouble!" Elsa whispered to him loudly.
"You did not." Kal loudly whispered back.
"Whatever," Elsa said, kicking him under the table. "Just eat your food."
Xavier dissolved into giggles.
Chapter 18
"All students, please make your way to your first class of the day." Mestra Luna's voice rang throughout the whole school.
"OK guys, come with me." Elsa said standing up and motioning for Harmony, Crystal, James, King, and Hunter to follow her. "I'll bring you to Mestra Luna."
"Common, guys." Harmony said, standing up. "What do we do with our plates?" Just then, all their plates dissapeared with a puff of gold smoke.
"Nothing." Xavier said, smiling. "I've gotta get to my class. Common, Stellar, you've got the class with me."
"Kal, get to your class." Elsa said.
"I am, I am." Kal muttered as he stood up and joined the rest
of the students departing to their classes.
"Follow me." Elsa said, walking out the large doors. They walked through the crowded, bustling hallways, up flights of marble stairs, until they finally reached a door with flowers and books, and the name "Mestra Luna" carved onto it. Elsa knocked on the door. "Mestra Luna? It's Elsa with the new students."
"Come in." Came Mestra Luna's voice from the other side of the door. Elsa opened the door and they walked into the room. It was filled with bookshelves and cupboards with strange orbs and objects in them. "Elsa, please take Crystal to Mestra Ocean, King to Master Ren, Hunter to Master Manta, and James to Master Shell."
"OK. Guys, come with me." Elsa said, leading them out the door and through the hallway.
"Harmony, stay with me." Mestra Luna said to her as Harmony made a move to follow them. "Please, take a seat." Harmony sat down in a large velvet chair in front of Mestra Luna's desk. "So, do you know what we're going to do today?"
"Get tested?" Harmony answered.
"Yes. Do you know what that is?"
"Um, you ask me questions?" Harmony said. "And I answer them?"
"That's the short end of it." Mestra Luna said, chuckling. "Let me guess, Xavier 'explained' it to you?" Harmony nodded, smiling softly. "Well, she was partly right. What I do is I ask you questions about when your Magic started appearing. You will answer, and I will ask you questions about what started happening and what you think your magic is. Shall we begin?"
"Yes." Harmony said, understanding much better now.
"Wonderful. When did your Magic start coming in?"
"The day before you came to get us." Harmony answered.
"That's when it came in? Or started coming in?"
"Oh. Um..." Harmony racked her brain. "I think I've always had my Magic. I think its just got stronger throughout the years."
"Mmh." Mestra Luna looked at Harmony, as if reading her soul. "Very interesting. What do you believe your power is?"
"I'm pretty sure my Magic is sound. Like, music." Harmony answered. "Because I've always been a really good singer and guitar player."
"Very well." Mestra Luna stood up and took a strange instrument from one of the shelves. She sat back down behind her desk and handed the strange instrument to Harmony. "If you
have the power of music and sound, you should be able to play this instrument without a problem." Harmony took the strange object and placed it in her lap. It looked like a cross between a xylophone, a violin, guitar, and a trumpet. Harmony was trying to decied which side was the front when her hands picked it up and plucked at the strings, making a beutiful sound that nobody could put into words. She plucked more strings as Mestra Luna watched, wide-eyed.
"That's enough." Mestra Luna said, putting up a hand. Harmony looked up, expecting to see her glaring at her, but to her surprise, she was grinning. "That was a rather impressive show of events." She said, gently taking the instrument from Harmony and placing it back on the self. "That insrument takes years to make it sound good. It takes at least two decades to
make it sound as good as you just made it sound."
"Wow." Harmony said, processing this information.
"And also, usually, people's Magic comes in when they are at a certain age. Magic almost never develops over a person's whole life."
"What does that mean, then?" Harmony asked, leaning forward.
"It means that you, Harmony, are a very powerful person indeed."
Chapter 19
"How was your guy's testing?" Harmony asked as they walked back up to their rooms.
"Good." They all answered.
"Did the teachers say that you were very powerful?" Harmony asked. James, Hunter, and King nodded.
"Harmony," Crystal said. "They did say that. So I'm, extra special?"
"Yeah, I geuss so." Harmony answered, slowing down and walking next to Crystal. "It's a lot to take, right?"
"Sim, é." Crystal said, nodding. They made it to their rooms and Hunter, James, and King all walked into King's room without a word. "I guess they need to have some boy-talk." Crystal said,
smiling.
"Yeah, and we need to have some girl-talk." Harmony replied, grabbing Crystal's wrist and gently pulling her into her room. "Just try not to make any of my guitars start blooming flowers." She joked as Crystal gaped at her room. Harmony sat on her bed cross-legged and patted the area next to her. Crystal sat down next to her.
"I really like your room." She said, smiling as she looked out the huge window.
"Me too. I bet I would like your room too." Harmony said, sitting back against the bedframe.
"You would." Crystal replied, laying down.
"So, what did Mestra Sea say to you?" Harmony asked, smiling.
"It's Mestra Ocean, you goober." Crystal said, giggling.
"Same difference." Harmony said, still smiling.
"She said that most magic comes when your a certain age, and it basically never, ever, develops over time." Crystal said, tracing circles on one of Harmony's pillows. "And she said that I was a really powerful kid. More powerful than mostly anyone."
"That's almost exactly what Mestra Luna told me." Harmony said. "What did she have you do? She had me play a weird instrument that I've never seen before and I played it better that perfectly."
"She had me make a weird seed grow into a really weird plant." Crystal said. There was a knock on the door. Harmony and Crystal walked to the door.
"What is it?" Harmony asked, opening the door.
"I'm hungry." James said. "When's lunch?"
"I don't know." Harmony said, stepping into the hallway where the other boys were waiting. Mestra Luna's voice rang through the school.
"Lunch period is beginning." He voice echoed. "Please make your way to the cafeteria."
"Does anyone know where the cafeteria even is?" Harmony asked.
"I'm pretty sure it's where we had breakfast." Crystal said.
"Might as well try." Harmony said, shrugging. They walked to the large room they had eaten breakfast in that morning and found Xavier waiting for them in line.
"Hey, guys!" She said, waving them down. "How was the testing?" She asked as Elsa, Kal, Lucky, and Stellar joined the,
"Good." Harmony replied. "How was class?"
"Class is class." Elsa said, shrugging. "But it was fun."
"What level are you, again?" Xavier asked Elsa.
"Ten." She replied. "Lucky and Stellar are level ten, too."
"Wait, Levels?" Harmony asked.
"Levels are like the amount of magic you have and how much you've learned about it and how to use it." Lucky answered. "Tomorrow the teachers will give you guys a paper with your level and class schedule on it."
"What level are you?" King asked Kal.
"Eight." Kal answered, grabbing a plate. "Hopefully you'll be in my classes." He added, handing each of them a plate.
"Yeah, that would be fun." King said, taking a meat and cheese sandwich from a platter.
"So, now that you know your Magic," Elsa said as they sat down
at a table. "Tell us what they are! We're dyeing to know!"
"I have the power of sound." Harmony said. "Like, music and stuff."
"I have the power of nature." Crystal said. "I thought it was just plants, but I have the power of all nature."
"I've got the power of lighting." James said.
"I have fire." Hunter added.
"And I have the power of time." King finished.
"Wow." Xavier said after a moment of silents. "You guys are, like, the power group."
"Yeah, those are really powerful." Elsa agreed, taking a bite of her sandwitch.
"Amazing!" Lucky said, smiling. "We would be the power group."
"Oh, yeah we would." Kal said.
"Hey, guys. I'm sitting with you." Gunner said, walking over and sitting next to King.
"Good afternoon to you, too." Xavier said, rolling her eyes at him.
"Hey, guys, how was the test?" Jake said, sitting down.
"Good." Crystal answered, taking a bite. "How was class?"
"Awesome! I learned how to teleport farther!" He said excitedly. "You wanna see?" Gunner promptly disappeared into the shadows under the table. "Your just jealous!" Jake yelled at the shadows.
Chapter 20
"Well, we've got to get to our next classes." Elsa said as Mestra Luna's voice echoed through the cafeteria.
"Remember, you guys are free for the rest of the day." Jake said, standing up.
"Lucky."
"Kal, get to--" Elsa began
"I know, my gosh." Kal grumbled, joining the other students walking out.
"Bye, guys. Maybe we'll come over by your room and we can talk a little before dinner?" Xavier said to Harmony.
"Sure." Harmony said, grinning.
"I'm going to go to the library." Crystal said. "Anyone wanna
come with me?"
"I'll come." King said. "Nothing else to do."
"I'll come too." James said, standing up.
"Me too." Hunter said.
"OK then." Harmony said. "Do you know where the library is?" She asked Crystal.
"Yeah." Crystal answered, nodding. "I saw a map in the hallway."
"OK. You guys can go there. I'll be in my room." Harmony said as they walked into the hallway and walked in oppisit derections.
Harmony walked to her room, opened the door, grabbed her guitar, and sat down on her bed. She plucked random strings, then stopped. She looked at a notebook on her nightstand. She reached out, picked it up, and started writing.
Chapter 21
Mestra Luna's voice rang through the school, and a few minutes later, Xavier was knocking on Harmony's door.
"You can come in." Harmony said. The door swung open and Xavier, Elsa, Lucky, and Stellar walked in.
"Whatca doing?" Xavier asked, hoping onto Harmony's bed and reading over her sholder.
"I thought of a song," Harmony said, continuing to write. "So I'm writing out the lyrics."
"Nice." Lucky said, reading the lyrics.
"'Nice?' That's awesome!" Xavier said, taking a golden mic, turning it on, and handing it to Harmony. "Can you do a demo for us?"
"Sure." Harmony said. She was glad that they where asking, not forcing her to do it like Mr. Lucas had done. She took the mic and started singing.
"Magic, you're diving me crazy!
This is driving me crazy
Magic, oh magic
Every torch in the hall flickered in and out
Ever wall in the hall shivered up and down!
Keep the pace just in case all the magic dies
'Cause this is driving me crazy!
Every voice in my head echoed, 'Yes!' and 'No!'
Every freight train of fought thought to 'Stop!' and 'Go!'
Keep the pace just in case all the magic dies
'Cause this is driving me crazy!
Big surprise, we’re the kids keeping out of sight
Rub your eyes, you're a star in the summer night
This is love, this is war, it’s insanity
Magic, you're driving me crazy!
Magic
Magic, you're driving me crazy!
This is driving me crazy
Every tear in my eyes dripped and wouldn’t stop
Every disc in my mind turned and couldn’t stop
Keep the pace just in case all the magic dies
‘Cause this is driving me crazy!
Every hand let me go and I didn’t know
Every warm-hearted love left me in the cold
Keep the pace just in case all the magic dies
‘Cause this is driving me crazy!
Big surprise, we’re the kids keeping out of sight
Rub your eyes, you're a star in the summer night
This is love, this is war, it’s insanity
Magic, you're driving me crazy!
Magic, you're driving me crazy!
Magic, you're driving me crazy!
This is driving me crazy
you’re driving me crazy
‘Cause this is driving me crazy
Magic, oh magic
Big surprise, we’re the kids keeping out of sight
Rub your eyes, you're a star in the summer night
This is love, this is war, it’s insanity
Magic, oh magic
Through the sky's,
You're en route at the speed of light
So, realize there’s chaos in the air tonight!
This is love, this is war, this is pure insanity
Magic, you’re driving me crazy!
This is driving me crazy
Magic, you’re driving me crazy!
This is driving me crazy
Magic, oh, magic." Harmony finished, smiling proudly. There was a moment of silence. Then, they all started aploding. Xavier stood up and cheered.
"Awesome!" She said, giving Harmony a high-five.
"Thanks." Harmony said, grinning. "I'll have to preform it for
Crystal and everyone else."
"Of course you are!" Lucky said. "That was really good. When's the next Feira de Talentos?"
"I think in a couple weeks." Elsa answered.
"Wait, what?" Harmony asked. Suddenly, Crystal walked in.
"Why are we talking about something called, 'The Fair of Talents?'" She asked, walking in, and sitting down next to Harmony on the bed.
"It's exsacly what it's name says." Elsa exsplaed. "It's when we have a fair, and all the students that want to can show off their talents."
"And in Harmony's case," Xavier said. "That means preform!"
"Nossa, sério?" Crystal asked, amazed. Everyone hesitated, but somehow, Harmony knew what she said.
"Sim, é verdade." Harmony replied. Crystal looked like she was going to respond, but then she paused and looked at Harmony in suprize.
"Desde quando você fala português?" She asked, as if testing if Harmony knew what she said.
"Desde hoje, eu acho." Harmony answered with ease, smiling from ear to ear.
"Harmony! We can talk now! This is awesome!" Crystal said, grinning. She gave Harmony a quick, tight hug.
"Um, sorry to interrupt," Xavier said. "But what the heck were you guys saying?"
"Nothing really important." Harmony replied. "But I guess having the power of sound lets me sing well, write songs, play my guitar with my mind, and know lots of different languages."
"I am super jealous," Xavier said, smiling. "But since I am your friend, I will try not to kill you in a jealous rage." Crystal squealed.
"What?!" She said, smiling. "Keep her away from Harmony! She's crazy!" The room erupted in laughter that almost drown out Mestra Luna's voice announcing that it was dinnertime.
Chapter 22
They walked down to the cafeteria, Harmony and Crystal chatted in Portuguese to each other, laughing in giggling ocasonally. Lucky hummed the tune to the song Harmony had made as they walked down the stairs. They walked into the cafeteria and joined the long line.
"Uh, guys, it's time to talk in English again. We sort of need to understand you." Xavier said as the line inched forward.
"Oh, right." Harmony said, smiling at Crystal. "This is really awesome. I'm just super excited."
"We know." Elsa said, handing each of them a plate. "We just wanna talk to you, too."
"Of course you do." Harmony said, grinning. "Everyone just
loves talking to me. I'm just so awesome." Everyone laughed.
"Hey, stop sounding like me." Gunner said, walking over to them with Jake and Kal following.
"Well, she is pretty awesome." Crystal said.
"Aw, you big sap." Harmony replied, smiling even bigger, giving Crystal a quick hug.
They served themselves to the food, found an empty table closer to the back of the large room, then sat down at the table.
"What did you guys do in Harmony's room?" Kal asked as he shoveled potatoes into his mouth.
"We watched her perform a song she wrote." Elsa answered. "And don't talk with your mouth full." Kal rolled his eyes.
"You write songs?" Jake asked Harmony before Elsa could say something else.
"Every now and then." Harmony answered, cutting her meat.
"Awesome." Jake said, putting some food in his mouth.
Kal looked at Harmony, smiled slyly, reached over the table, touched her, sat back in his chair, closed his eyes and concentrated, and in a puff of blue smoke, Harmony was sitting where Kal used to be.
"Hello." Harmony/Kal said to them, smiling. It was Elsa's turn to roll her eyes. Real Harmony jumped back in surprise. "I'm Harmony, and I'm awesome and everyone loves me, and my power is awesome, and I talk with Crystal and nobody else but me and her know what the heck we're saying to each other." Kal/Harmony said to all of them, grinning bigger. Everyone giggled.
"Kal, stop it." Elsa said, even though she was giggling.
Kal/Harmony put their finger on their nose and closed their eyes and in another puff of blue smoke, Kal was sitting their again.
"Being a girl is so weird." Kal said, diving back into his food.
"It's kind of alarming to see me in front of me." Harmony said.
"Agreed." Elsa said. "One night, I was sleeping, and I woke up and Kal had turned into me and was sleeping next to me in my bed."
"That was priceless!" Kal said, laughing at the memory. "You screamed so loud!"
"Oh, ha, ha, ha." Elsa said, her voice dripping in sarcasum.
Chapter 23
After dinner, everyone headed to their rooms.
"See you guys tomorrow morning at breakfast!" Lucky said as they walked out of the cafeteria and to their dorms.
"See you then." Harmony said as her, Crystal, James, King and Hunter walked up the stairs to their dorms
"I'll never forget you!" Xavier said as her, Elsa, Lucky, and Stella walked up a different flight of stairs. Harmony laughed as they dissapered out of view as they climbed higher.
"Night, guys." Harmony said to all of them as they departed to their dorm rooms.
"Night." They replied.
"Harmony?" Crystal asked. Harmony turned before walking
into her room. "We have class tomorrow, right?"
"Yeah, we do." Harmony answered. "Mestra told me that we're going to get our schedules and all the information we need tomorrow morning during breakfast."
"OK. Thanks, Harmony." Crystal whispered as she walked into her room and closed her door softly.
"Night, Crystal." Harmony whispered into the darkness, stepping into her room and shutting the door quietly.
