Aspergers, anxiety and just general childhood fears,
I have found using animals in stories very beneficial.
This is to all the children that I have worked with that
just needed a good plan and to the animals for
providing a forum to get the message across.

Dreamin was a beautiful brown, black and
white Arabian pinto horse. She had a long
white mane and black tail.

All her life she had wanted to be a show horse.
On the farm where she was born, she loved to
watch the other show horses in training.

One day when Dreamin's owner, Lauren, came
to ride her, Dreamin found out that she was
going to be a show horse. She was very
excited and worked really hard. She learned
how to arch her neck just right and lowered
her head to look just like a western horse was
suppose to. She had watched the other horses
her whole life and she knew what to do.

Just before the show, Lauren came down to
the barn with a pretty bridle with silver on the
sides for Dreamin. She also got to have new
long reins just for the show. She was so proud
of her new bridle.

On the day of the show Lauren came down to
the barn and said Dreamin needed a bath.
She took Dreamin outside and washed and
scrubbed her until she shined. She combed
out her mane and tail so they fluttered in the
wind.

Dreamin rode in the horse trailer to go to the
show. She was so excited and scared that she
forgot to breathe. When she got to the show
everything looked scary. She had wanted to
be a show horse her whole life, but now she
wasn't sure. Everything was loud and there
were so many people, and horses!

When Lauren put the saddle and new bridle on
Dreamin, Dreamin got even more afraid. She
started to breathe really fast! "What happens
if I don't remember what to do?" she thought.
Dreamin felt like she was going to explode!
She couldn't think about what to do, she was
so afraid.

Lauren stroked her face and talked to her. She
said "Dreamin, you have always wanted to be a
show horse and now is your chance. You just
need to try. Take a deep breath and hold it in and
let it out slowly.
Remember all your friends back at the farm, they
use to be afraid too. It can be scary for anyone
to try something new. But look at them now.
Some of them are champions and you can be too.
All it takes is for you to try and do your best.
Let's make a plan, take slow deep breathes and
think of some words to say in your head to help
you remember what to do."

Dreamin thought about it, she took a deep
breath and held it before letting it out slowly.
It felt kind of good. She tried again and again.
She started to relax. Then she thought about
all the times she and Lauren had practiced.
How she knew to put her head down and trot
really slowly. She knew to arch her neck. She
was a show horse and she was going to do it!
