Our story begins in an ordinary school on a not-so-ordinary day. The grade six students are graduating into middle school. Amy and John are two of the graduates in class five, and they have been best friends since they met in third grade. During that time, they had helped, supported, and even saved each other (once from bees and once from a dog). But little did they know what was going to happen to their perfect friendship.

On their first day, Amy immediately saw a crew of cool kids in her homeroom, and, like most of the other kids in her grade, wanted to join their group. Unfortunately, they largely ignored her attempts to enter the team. Eventually, she persuaded Amilia to let her in, but Alice wasn't convinced. "Come with us after school," she whispered. Amy wasn't sure what that meant.

After school, Amy hid behind a pillar and waited for Amilia and Alice. She knew that she always walked home from school with John, and she didn't want him to see her. Shortly afterwards, Amilia and Alice came, and they led her through confusing and increasingly narrowing streets into a shadowy alley. Amy looked around in fear, but she still trusted Amilia and Alice. John peered at them from around a corner. He wanted to defend Amy from whoever those other girls were and whatever they were trying to do to her, because something told him they were up to no good. However, he refrained from taking action immediately and instead followed them into the alley.
Amilia and Alice both had serious expressions on their faces. "We saw that boy with you in the morning," Alice began. Amy opened her mouth to explain, but not before Alice continued, while looking straight into her eyes, "We don't want him with you." For a moment, Amy was shocked. From around the corner, John almost gasped out loud. "She won't do it," he thought, "I know she won't do it!"
"Alice and I talked about this," said Amilia. "If you want to join, you need to give up on him."
"But John is my..."
"So you won't join?"
"No, but..."
"Then you'll give him up," Amilia said.
Amy was stuck. She had been close friends with John for over three years, but she knew how big a difference being friends with cool kids can make. Meanwhile, John was barely breathing. "She won't do it," he kept telling himself, "she WON'T do it!"
Finally, Amy made her decision. She planned to spend some time with Amilia and Alice every day, and spend most of her time with John in secret. She whispered her answer to the cool girls, then left quietly, leaving John around the corner, on the floor, and breathing so rapidly that he felt like his lungs were full of asbestos.

The next day, Amy met up with Amilia and Alice, thinking of the excuses she would use when she was ready to reunite with John. Then she saw Amilia opening another kid's locker and dumping all the stuff out. She yelped loudly before quickly jumping behind a pillar to avoid being seen. Unfortunately, Alice noticed her and walked towards her.
"Hey!" she said.
"W-What is she doing?" Amy stuttered.
"Just getting rid of this guy's books for him," said Amilia, turning around. "Idiot's so dumb he doesn't need them!"
Amy was shocked. She realized how cruel her new "friends" were, but she was still worried about not being popular anymore if she left their group. She stood, rooted to the floor like a statue, as Alice walked up to another locker and dumped the lunchbox that was in it onto the ground, saying, "This kid's so fat she better not have her lunch!"
