Chapter One ~ Lost in Paris!
Kit Travel looked sorrowfully around her. She had just flown into Paris,
France, from America, and she had already lost herself on this
detestable street! Her mother, Mrs Travel had sent her to represent the
family at her aunt's wedding: Vanessa Carl to Pierre Bordelon. It
sounded so romantic and Kit had never had such a fine opportunity!
Paris had been romantic, too, until she had lost her way and gotten
confused.
The streets of Paris were long and winding and the city was so
crowded Kit couldn't even see the end of the street! With a sigh of
despair she decided to enter the closest café and sit down. Her tour
guide would soon arrive and come looking for her. He had promised to
meet her at Café de Louis, but the only problem was... she was didn't
know where it was! Kit was sitting very forlornly when she saw -

two black shoes approach her table and looked up into the eyes of a
complete stranger - and he was smiling at her!
"Bonjour," he greeted her, sliding into the opposite chair. "Can I help
you, demoiselle?"
Kit looked blankly at him, then shifted uncomfortably in her seat.
"Well, I'm sort of lost, actually... monsieur," she added hastily, trying to
seem French. She hoped he wasn't going to bother her, for there was no
way she could defend him. It made her uneasy.
"Where is the place you are going?" he inquired gently, failing to notice
her shyness because of his own confidence.
"Café de Louis," she said very softly. She was shocked when he jumped
up eagerly and laughed.
"I know the way! Come, demoiselle, I will help you," he said kindly.
"Come with me," he told her, going directly -

to the counter. He signaled the waitress and suddenly broke into fluent
French:
"Nous serons de retour, Maggie, ne vous inquiétez pas pour moi. Cette
jeune dame a besoin d'aide pour trouver Café de Louis. À plus!"
He winked audaciously at the sweet waitress. As they left the café, he
fell into step with Kit and grinned at her surprised expression.
"Why are you looking at me like that?" he asked teasingly,
looking very contented and in-his-own-realm.
"You acted like you knew her!" Kit declared in a
shocked tone, trying to ignore his laughs and smiles.
Paris was becoming very strange indeed.
"She's my sister!" the young man cried, bursting into
delighted laughter. Kit flushed, too embarrassed to speak.
Everyone seemed to know everyone else! Perhaps this
stranger knew her tour guide and could direct her to him.
But she could find him herself if only she could locate -

Café de Louis!
"What is your name?" he was asking her, interrupting her worried
thoughts. "What's the matter?"
He was so kind! Kit thought he was just like her brother
Jamie and tears filled her eyes. She did miss him so!
"Nothing is really the matter if you can find Café de Louis
and Alicio Berle. My name is Kit Travel."
"Al's meeting you there? Well, then its a piece of cake! I know him!"
"What is your name?" Kit asked, feeling relieved and excited.
"Fredrick Baston, at your service, demoiselle. Here we are!"
He took her arm to guide her through the crowd and then
they entered the lovely little café on the street. Her eyes immediately flew
to the closest table where a man sat, looking over a brochure. He wore a
leather jacket and sunglasses, but he matched the description she had
been given by the pilot of the plane from America. Could this be her
guide?
The man's head came up just then and he met Kit's eyes.

Chapter Two ~ A Moment in a Café
For a moment they looked intently at each other. Her stomach dropped
to her brown shoes and she took Fredrick's hand in a hurry. The guide
stood and extended his calloused hand to Fredrick across the table.
"Is this the little Bianca?" he asked in a handsome voice, turning
interested eyes on Kit's pale but beautiful face.
"No!" Fredrick laughed humorously, vigorously pumping the others
hand. "This is Mademoiselle Kit Travel. She is here for her tour guide:
you."
The man took off his sunglasses and eyed her more closely.
"Ah, I thought she was your sister. But Freddy, I can see she isn't.
She is much prettier.I am Alicio Berle. At your service and a pleasure
to make your acquaintance, ma petite," he said graciously, taking her
hand with a comforting touch. Fredrick watched them exchange -

words and decided to slip away. It was better to leave her with the
capable guide, instead of enjoying her presence alone. The guide
noticed him walking away and grew reserved again much to Kit's
consternation.
She was more embarrassed than him and shuffled nervously towards
the window view, beautiful in the morning sunshine.
"Look!" she suddenly cried, motioning him to hurry to her side. He at
once came and leaned an arm around her to see what she was pointing
at. There was a host of doves, flitting gracefully around an exquisite
fountain in the middle of the square.
"Where are they from?" she asked, unmindful of his close,
intimidating presence.
"The Abbey of Saint Germain des Prés," he told her quietly. It is a
beautiful place, and I go there often."
He paused a moment, then looked down sweetly at her -

with an excited look in his eyes.
"I know we planned to go see The Arc de Triomphe de
l'Étoile, but what if we went to the abbey first?"
Kit agreed rather doubtfully, but the guide's unruffled appearance
raised her confidence. They went slowly out the door of the café and
turned onto the grey sidewalks full of tourists and artists painting on
their canvases. A few children running in between cars toward the
center of town passed them and Kit kept hold of her guide's arm. As if
by magic, her fears slowly subsided as they passed brightly decorated
shops and laughing people with smiles on their faces. There was very
little to be somber about in Paris! The very feeling of being there was
good enough. Kit soon had lost herself in the gorgeousness around
them.
"My goodness! This is the most happy place I've ever been!" Kit
cried, dancing on light feet.
Alicio laughed and gazed around them in mild agreement.

"That is perhaps because it is called The City of Love," he said wisely,
matching his strides to hers.
Kit looked up in surprise. He sounded almost sad and she could not
guess why in such a merry city.
"What is it?" she asked gravely, searching his face. Alicio stopped
and looked down at her almost fondly.
"It is nothing, ma petite. I am only
wondering and remembering."
"What?" she asked, as they continued
slowly on their way.
"My parents used to walk this very
way with me. We often visited the great
Abbey of Saint Germain des Prés, you
know?"
"Oh, I'm sorry," Kit murmured, looking
down.

Chapter Three ~ What Lies Within
The sidewalk had led them to a paved parking-lot and before them
loomed the great abbey. Kit and Alicio walked slowly in reverent awe
across the parking-lot and faced the great front doors.
It was like nothing Kit had ever seen, but on her guide's face was
written the pain of nostalgia. His parents must have been very dear to
him indeed. She sighed as they approached the door and let him drop
her arm. He was silent, as if in another world.
"Alicio!" she called pensively, afraid to enter the dark doorway
without him. He at once turned and caught her hand tightly.
"This way," was his comforting whisper, and Kit did not even
hesitate. With him, nothing was bad or scary. The world was new and
open to her eyes. This great abbey was now above her head, -

standing so steadily and straight as if to live up to its famous name.
There was a long, majestic hallway leading into the abbey and Alicio
led Kit along the red-bricked tunnel.
A metal plate was screwed onto the wall and Kit's eyes flew to the
words. They gave a haunting effect in such a place and she leaned ever
closer to her guide.
Alicio did not seem to notice her presence again, but he kept a
careful hold on her hand. A doorway filled with light appeared ahead
and Alicio went toward it as if it called him by name. Could this be a
place his parents had often come with him?
Kit felt a shiver pass over her. This was an old and ancient place. It
held such memory - and it all was pending down against them. The
atmosphere was such that it could have made her faint.
"Alicio!" Kit gasped hoarsely, wringing his arm to get his attention.

He did not turn as he hurried toward the door and Kit had all she could
do to keep up with him. She felt they were entering a place full of
Something great, and a yet a place filled with nothing.
"Wait for me!" was her distressed cry, but the guide heard her and
mercifully slowed up. They now stood in the entrance to the great
interior of the abbey - and it was a terrible sight indeed. The walls were
a dark polished brown with intricate maroon designs and the light in the
abbey was dim - so dim she could hardly see anything but a faint
outline of the walls and many chairs laid across -

the floor. Pillars lined the walls and the roof was a rimmed arch, full of
splendor. A small group of people knelt in the front row and there was a
ceremony going on before them, almost like a secret guild in the
catacombs.
"What's that?"
Kit's eyes looked up above the altar where pure sunlight shone down
through the brilliant stained-glass windows that depicted different
saints.
"A Mass," Alicio almost whispered, staring tenderness at the altar
with hope in his eyes.
"I'm going to attend," he told her, remembering to push her ahead of
him. It happened too often that he accidentally left her behind, he
thought with slight amusement. She didn't seem to be able to take care
of herself.
No one noticed or saw them as Kit and Alicio slid into one of the back
rows. The young man immediately crossed himself and looked intently
up at the beautiful altar.
