One afternoon whilst Lauren watching 

TV, a News program came on. 

On the screen, were pictures of lots of 

rubbish... 

Rubbish in the ocean...

On land... 

In the air...

In the river...

And the reporter kept 

repeating the phrase, 

"Waste Management"

Lauren was confused and 

curious about what she had 

just seen, so she decided to go 

and ask her Mum. 

Mum, what's waste management?

Well, people, you and me, make lots 

of waste every day. So much waste 

that we have to make disposal 

systems to deal with all the rubbish 

and pollution. This is waste 

management. 

Waste is usually disposed of in the 

oceans, rivers, air and on land. 

That's what I saw on TV!

There are many problems created 

when it comes to disposing waste 

like this.

We dispose solid waste (like wrappers, 

bottles, building materials) by dumping 

it in landfills - so this is burying the 

rubbish under ground. 

But landfills take up lots of land and the 

pollutants (bad things) from the rubbish 

soak into the soil to underground waters 

and affect food chains.   

In fact, because there is no more room in 

Sydney for landfills, the government is 

considering dumping waste in other areas of 

NSW. For example, an old mine near Goulburn. 

However doing this would increase Sydney's 

already large 'ecological footprint'.  

Liquid Waste - Sewage and other 

household waste (dish washing liquids 

and car washing liquids) are all liquids 

waste. 

Liquid waste water and other solid 

wastes are disposed of in the water 

around the coast. This is bad because it 

doesn't get recycled, it can make our 

drinking water unclean and rubbish in 

the ocean poses a major threat to 

marine wildlife. Pollution in rivers also 

leads to a loss of important plants and 

animals.
