Hundreds of years ago in ancient China, there
were two ways to become a Royal Governor:
Being born in a royal family,

Or perform well and become a Champion in the
imperial examination.

Being a Royal Governor meant having power,
and with power came wealth, reputation, and
respect. Therefore, all the students studied
hard and prayed to be Champions in the
examination, and become Royal Governors
from nobody.
Nanke was one of the students.

Nanke was educated and told to study hard so
that he could become a Champion in the future
since the first day he went to school. And he
did so. For years, Nanke would wake up with
the roosters’ crow and begin his day with the
rising sun. He would study until the moon was
high in the sky, and his eyelids refused to stay
open any longer.

However, he took the examination three times
but failed in all. He was smart but the
competition was so intense. Each time there
would be thousands of students taking the
examination, but only the best 10 of them could
become the Champions.

Nanke did not give up. Sometimes he would
fantasize about lavish dinner, how handsome
he would look in his uniform, and imagined that
he would be one of the Champions and
awarded by the Emperor himself! His heart beat
like a drum just picturing the scene!

One day, after studying long and hard, Nanke
grew very tired. He lay down to take a nap.

In his dream, Nanke took the examination and
this time, he performed so well that he became
the Zhuangyuan (Number One Champion)! He
was invited to the Royal Palace and awarded by
the Emperor.
He was smart and knowledgeable, and the
Emperor liked him so much that Nanke was
allowed to marry one of the princesses.

Nanke was appointed to be a Royal Governor
by the Emperor. He worked hard in his
territory. He reduced the taxes, improved the
social security, and devoted himself to the
education of the young people. The people in
Nanke's territory lived in happy lives. They
respected and loved Nanke from the bottom of
their hearts.
Nanke always left his palace and walked on the
streets for inspection. Wherever he went,
people would gather around and cheer his
name.

Nanke lived a very happy life. Many years later,
Nanke grew old and had many sons and
daughters, as well as friends who loved him.
One starry evening, Nanke sat on his porch and
reflected on his life. He couldn’t help but smile
when he thought about all he accomplished. He
grew so happy and content that he dozed off.
