My ancestors began in
Normandy, moved to
Ireland and made their
way across the waters to
America. They landed on
southern shores.

My last name Ussery is an ancient Norman
name that arrived in England after the Norman
conquest of 1066. The Ussery family lived in
Kent, a region of Normandy.

The Ussery name is English in origin. There are
different variations ranging from Esarey to
Usrey and probably Necessary as well, as odd
as that sounds.

My first name Ian came from my father's
brother and so my name means "God is
gracious".

My great, great grandfather was taught how to read during
slavery. Back then you were not allowed to read or even learn
how to read as a slave.
There is very little recorded on my great, great grandfather. I
was told he picked cotton and the lady of the house taught him
how to read.
My grandfather told me because his grandfather learned to
read against great odds, his father, Harrison Ussery, stressed
that getting a education was very important.
Each generation starting with my grandfather has gone to
college and really values education.

This is my
grandmother, Jean
Ussery and my
grandfather,
Terdema Ussery, the
patriarch of our
family.

At the bottom of this picture is my great grandmother, Mary Ussery on her 100th
Birthday. I was only three months old.

This is a picture of the continent where
part of my family originated. Because of
poor records, we do not know which
country/s we came from. But we do know
Ireland was one as well.

This is a picture of my
grandfathers father,
Harrison Ussery.
