thats to bad
we pay all the taxes
Long ago, France had a king named Louis XVI. Society was divided into three estates.
The Third Estate paid most of the taxes, while the rich paid very little. France was also deeply in debt after expensive wars. New ideas from the Enlightenment taught people that everyone should have rights and a voice in government. Soon, many people wanted change.

we won't stop until we get a constitution
In 1789, King Louis XVI called the Estates-General to solve France’s money problems.
Each estate had one vote. The Third Estate thought this was unfair because they represented most of the people. They wanted voting by head, where every person got one vote.
When they were locked out of their meeting room, they met in a tennis court and made the Tennis Court Oath. They promised not to stop until France had a new constitution. They called themselves the National Assembly.

we need food for our family
The people became angry and stormed the Bastille, a prison that symbolized the king’s power.
Soon, many peasants attacked the homes of nobles during the Great Fear.
Women marched to Versailles during the Bread Riot, demanding food. They forced the king and queen to move to Paris.
The Revolution’s new slogan became:
Liberty, Equality, Fraternity!
I'll give y'all a constitution

The Constitution of 1791 made France a limited monarchy, meaning the king had less power.
The government also took control of the Church.
Austria and Prussia worried the Revolution would spread, so they declared war on France.
Some nobles, called émigrés, fled France because they feared the Revolution.

stop right there
King Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antoinette tried to escape France, but they were captured at the border.
The new National Convention ended the monarchy.
The Sans-Culottes, ordinary working people, and the Jacobins, a radical political group, demanded stronger action.
King Louis XVI was found guilty of treason and was executed by the guillotine.
