CRASH!

Maya froze. Her heart did a little flip. 

She looked down—the heart-shaped globe Daddy made for Mommy was broken into little pieces on the floor.

Maya held her breath.

 Did Mommy hear? ...........Silence.

She quickly grabbed her little broom and dustpan.

 Swish, swish.

 She swept up the pieces and hid them deep, deep in the trash can. She didn't want anyone to see.

That night, when Mommy tucked her into bed, she asked softly, “Maya, do you know what happened to my heart-globe?”

Maya’s tummy felt all wiggly and sour, like she had a knot inside. She looked at her mom. “No, Mommy,” she whispered.

Mommy gave her a long, sad look and then a sad smile

as she kissed Maya’s forehead, clicked off the light, and closed the  door.

Maya pulled her blanket up to her chin. She closed her eyes tight, and her bedroom began to fade away.

Poof!

She wasn’t in her bed anymore. She was in the DreamWorld.

Maya loved the DreamWorld.

 It was a place where anything could happen! 

But tonight, as Maya looked around, the beautiful, bright DreamWorld looked a little bit different...

Maya sat on the cold, hard rock. She felt small. She felt sad.

The sky looked grey. The trees stood still. No birds sang. No fairies danced. Everything felt quiet and lonely.

Suddenly, a soft glow blinked. Blink. Blink.

Pip the Piffle floated down. He did not zoom. He did not zip. He drifted slow and low. His long, fuzzy ears drooped.
