Students identify and explain the importance of Texas symbols, including the state flag, state seal, and other symbols that represent Texas.

Every state has symbols that represent what makes it unique. Texas symbols help us remember our history, our land, and the people who helped build our state.

The Texas Flag

The Texas flag is called the Lone Star Flag. The single star represents Texas independence and unity. The colors also have meanings:

The Lone Star

Texas is called the Lone Star State because of the single star on its flag. The star became a symbol of Texas when people fought for independence from Mexico.

The Texas State Seal

The Texas state seal is an official symbol of the government of Texas. It includes an image of a star, a wreath, and branches that represent Texas history.

The Texas State Capitol

The Texas State Capitol is where Texas laws are made. Leaders called legislators meet there to discuss ideas and make decisions for Texans.

The Governor of Texas

The governor is the leader of Texas’ executive branch. The governor helps carry out laws and works with other leaders to serve the people of Texas.

The Texas Constitution

Texas has a constitution that explains how our state government works. It lists the rights and responsibilities of Texas citizens.

Texas State Bird:

The northern mockingbird is the Texas state bird. This bird is known for copying the sounds of other birds and animals.
