I dedicate this book to my brother who is a farmer.

Gavin heard his alarm beeping. He rolled over and threw his pillow at it in hopes that it would stop it. Gavin had to wake up at seven in the morning to help his family on the farm every weekend, but waking up that early never got easier, especially since he wasn't a morning person.
When he finally decided to roll out of bed and out of his bedroom, he walked into the hall where he was met by his sister Anna as she shouted, "Gavin! Gavin! Let's go play outside!"
To Anna, the weekends were just for playing outside, but for Gavin they were long hot days in the dry Panhandle heat.

The Panhandle rarely got any rain, which made their Dad upset because the crops were not growing well and the soil was dry. Even though this made Gavin's dad upset, in a way, Gavin was slightly relieved because he felt like this was one of the easier summers on the farm because there were less crops to harvest.
As Gavin and Anna walked outside, Gavin noticed something a little different about this day in particular. The sky around them was very brown and you could barely see the field surrounding their house.
"Gavin, what's wrong with the sky?" asked Anna.
"I think it's just a dust storm, it shouldn't be a big deal we'll play out here for a bit and then I need to go help dad." explained Gavin.

Moments later, the wind started to pick up and the dust got so bad that Gavin and Anna couldn't even see the field around them.
"We need to go inside! This dust storm is worse than one I've ever seen!" exclaimed Gavin.
Anna and Gavin rush inside their house and slam the door as the hard wind fought against them.

From inside, the wind started to roar as loud as a lion. Anna's eyes began to get watery so Dad hugged Anna tightly. Gavin looked out the windows and there was nothing but brown dust against them.
After a couple of hours, the wind grew even stronger and Gavin grew worried that this storm was never going to end.

Gavin must have fallen asleep while waiting for the storm to end because he woke up to his Dad saying, "Gavin, wake up I need you to go outside with me and check on the crops."
Gavin slowly got up from the couch and looked at Anna, who was smiling eating a bowl of ice cream. Dad must have given her that to cheer her up Gavin thought, and it seemed like it was working considering she had a big smile on her face.

Gavin walked outside with his Dad and noticed everything looked so much different than it did before the storm. The porch was covered in a layer of dust. There weren't as many crops this year as there were last year, but now, there almost weren't any crops at all.
Gavin looked at his Dad as he was walking and his dad had a sad look on his face. He was sad for his Dad because he knows he works very hard on his crops and now they're all gone.

"Dad, are you okay?" asked Gavin.
Gavin's dad sighed, "I'm going to be. We'll just have to start over and keep trying to see if crops will still grow, but I'm not sure if they will now."
Gavin could hear the worry in his Dad's voice and just wanted to fix everything, but he didn't know how.
