Elizabeth "Lizzie" Johnson lived in Austin, Texas.  She was a teacher and bookkeeper for local cattlemen.  Although it was uncommon at the time for women to work outside of the home, Lizzie worked very hard and always looked for new ways to make money. 

Because of the social stigmas surrounding women at the time, Lizzie had her work cut out for her.  She had more to prove than the men in her profession, but she didn't flinch.  She let her work ethic and understanding of the cattle business speak for itself. 

Lizzie decided to buy her own cattle and even registered her own brand.  She was smart and made good decisions in her cattle trading, and quickly made a name for herself.

 Lizzie soon met and married a cattleman name Hezekiah Williams.  The two each kept and branded their own individual herds of cattle, but often worked together. 

Hezekiah struggled as a cattleman.  He did not have the good instincts that his wife Lizzie did.  He often lost money and even cattle due to his poor decision making.  Lizzie had to bail him out more than once and even secretly branded his cattle as her own to avoid more loss.  

Despite their differences, Lizzie and Hezekiah were committed to each other in life and in business. Together they drove their herds up the Chisholm Trail.
