Imagine a world with no phones, no television, and no cars. This was the type of world Laura Ingalls Wilder lived in. Laura Ingalls became one of the most influential children's authors in American History. Laura Ingalls' life story reminds us of how the world used to be on the American Frontier.

I was born in the year 1867 near Pepin, Wisconsin. When I was really young, my Pa packed up our covered wagon and decided to go west around 1870. We started in Kansas, then made our way to Walnut Grove, Minnesota. Oh, how I loved that place. Then, we stayed in Burr Oak, Iowa. In 1879, my Pa got a job at the railroad in the Dakota Territory, so we decided to settle there.

Life on the prairie was hard for the Ingalls' family. Laura Ingalls and her family endured blizzards and a grasshopper plague that sometimes forced them to relocate.
In addition to school, Laura Ingalls helped her mother and father around the frontier. She helped clean the house, wash clothes, churn butter, bake bread, sew clothes, and work around the farm with her Pa.

The Ingalls family moved west to the Dakota Territory in 1879 so that Charles Ingalls; Laura's father, could work for the railroad. Laura Ingalls went to the First School of De Smet in the Dakota Territory. To help her family's financial crisis, Laura became a teacher in 1882. The school she taught at was a bit far from her family so every weekend, a nice man named Almonzo Wilder took her home to see her family with a horse drawn buggy. Laura and Almonzo fell in love and got married in 1885.
