Asian elephants are found in Nepal, India and Southeast Asia. Changes
in their environment though have led to them being found in Indochina.

Male elephants leave the herd when they are around thirteen years old.
They will then either travel alone or in bachelor groups.

They are able to communicate through rumbles, growls, bellows, and
moans. These sounds can travel for a mile or more.

For thousands of years, Asian elephants have been domesticated.
People use them to move heavy objects, to ride on their backs, and
even to start a war.

Do to the loss of habitat, illegal hunting, and the capturing of Asian
elephants they are an endangered species. There are only about 30,000
of these elephants left today.

On the upper lip of their trunk Asian elephants have a single “finger.”
This is different from the African elephant which have a “finger” on
the upper and lower tip of their trunk.

When elephants meet they extend their trunk as a form of greeting.

Asian elephants are herbivorous, which means they only eat plants. The
vegetation they eat is grasses, leaves, shoots, fruits, nuts, and seeds.

Young elephants being making independent moves at the age of four.
Their mother will still supervise them until they are around thirteen
years old.

Elephants do not feel comfortable when all four feet are off the
ground. That is why they can not jump.

Elephants are known to be good swimmers, they swim with their
mouth underwater and their trunk above water. Their trunk acts like
a snorkel helping them to breath.

Compared to other mammals, Asian elephants have the longest
pregnancy. It last for 22 months.

The matriarch of a herd is usually known as the oldest female. She
is the one that sets the pace for the herd to travel and decides
where they go.

The trunk of an elephant is a long nose that has many functions. It
helps an elephant smell, breath, trumpet, and drink water.

In order to send out the heat their bodies make, Asian elephants
keep their ears in motion all the time.

Besides hunters, tigers are the primary predator of the Asian
elephants. Tigers will usually hunt the elephant calves, instead of the
stronger adult elephants.

Even though elephants are huge animals, they are actually
really quite walkers.

The Asian elephant plays an important role in the cultures and
religions of countries in most of ranges that they are found.

Their skin color is dark gray to brown and have patches of pink
on their forehead, ears, base of the trunk and chest.

Male Asian elephants have tusks, while some females have short tusk
known as tushes. Male elephants are hunted, because of the ivory
found in their tusks.
