We were wealthy. I was given my first
credit card at the age of seven just so I
could buy the Dolce backpack I so
desired from the store in downtown
LA. My mother was a retired actress
whose claim to fame was her successful
movie franchise from the eighties. I’m
sure you’ve heard of the CosmoTrac
movies.

Before those movies, my
grandmother had her own
acting success. Even my
great grandmother was in
the acting business. She
starred alongside Charlie
Chaplain a coauple times.
Of course I am expected to
fill the very large and
famous shoes left behind
by the women in my
family.

Chad was also wealthy. He was the youngest kid
in our first grade class to have a credit card. I was
the second to get one. He always beat me at
everything and I resented him for that. His father
was a heartless, yet very talented, director. He
was the biggest name in the movie business and it
was every actor or actresses lifelong dream to
work for him. My mother had gotten the
opportunity several times.

As talented as my mother is, I
don’t think she was
continuously rehired by him
for her acting skills. They had
a long on and off secret
relationship lasting all the
way through her fourth
marriage. She is now on
husband number six.

As much as my mother loved Chad’s father, he
didn’t. Chad’s father blamed his son for
everything and in turn, Chad blamed his
father for everything. It wasn’t until high
school, sophomore year to be exact, that I saw
Chad for the person he really was. This was
around the time my mother’s fourth marriage
was ending and so was her relationship with
Robert, Chad’s father. I narrowly avoided
walking in on an argument Robert and my
mother was having but that didn’t stop me
from eavesdropping.

“He’s nothing but a distraction to our relationship.
I’m sorry I’ve been busy dealing with his outbursts
but I want nothing more than us.”
“Your son does not have control over our
relationship. Besides, he’s just a teenage boy who
wants some attention from his own father. I love
you Robert, but I could never be married to you
because of how you treat Chad. I know I’ve married
men I don’t love as much as you but I did it for
Claire. Every man I married has been a good father
to her and that’s the one thing you can’t do for us.
My daughter’s happiness is more important to me
than my own. Maybe you should learn the same.”

“Your daughter is not like Chad.
Claire does everything she’s
supposed to do. Chad is a product
of his devil of a mother. He’s just
like her and I can’t take it and I
know you wouldn’t be able to take
it either. He wants to be a director
like me but has no stinkin’ talent
no matter how much I’ve tried.
Robert Fin’s son is a failure. How
would you like to hear that in the
tabloids? Dara Blaine’s daughter
fails at acting.”

“His success has nothing to do with you being a
father to him! We can’t work. This conversation is
over.”
To my knowledge, that was the end of their affair.
Robert’s words hurt, even me. I saw Chad as
something more than the guy who had to one up
everyone. That was just his way of succeeding in
others’ eyes since he couldn’t in the eyes of his
father.

I began to befriend him. He was definitely
confused by my actions. We were arch
enemies for eleven years and all of the sudden
I wanted to be his best friend. He had
followers but no friends. The same was also
true with me. My minions followed me
everywhere I went and did whatever I asked of
them. As popular as we were, not a single
friend was in our company.

After a few weeks of persistency, he
finally agreed to hang out. He must
have thought it was some kind of
scheme to get one step ahead of him
because he was glued to his phone
texting one of his minions the whole
time. We just walked in the park. I
did most of the talking. I can’t even
recall what topics were discussed.
When our time was up, I hugged him.
“We should do this again!” I said.
“Erm yeah…” he murmured.

The next day at school, I walked with Chad to
class. He was a little less defensive this time.
Maybe he was starting to realize that this
wasn’t a joke or scheme. I truly wanted to be a
friend to him. He agreed to hang out again
that night.
This time his eyes weren’t on his phone. In
fact, I barely saw his phone the whole night.
We watched at least five different movies and
laughed together all night. I never knew how
much fun a friend could be.

Soon we grew to be each other’s best friends.
Neither of us had experienced a best friend
before. We spent almost every day together
after school and most weekend nights as well.
My mother was happy for Chad but worried for
me.
“Claire I’ve had my experience with a Fin man.
They are just not good for us Blaine women.”
“Mom I know how his dad is. Chad is nothing
like his father. Besides, we’re just friends and
nothing more.”

I didn’t lie to my mother,
technically. I really thought we
would only ever be friends. Chad
and I decided to spend New
Year’s Eve together. I threw an
extravagant party at our beach
house in Laguna. We drank
champagne and swam in the
moonlit ocean. Everyone at the
party started counting down from
sixty when the clock said
11:59PM. Our voices boomed
louder the closer we got to zero.

At midnight, Chad grabbed me by
the waist and kissed me for what
seemed as if it were to last forever.
At the time I went with it and
wasn’t quite sure if it was just
because he wanted to have
someone to kiss at that crucial
time or because he actually liked
me. There were fireworks quite
literally. I told myself that it
meant nothing and I didn’t want
to admit it, but I thought about it
constantly.

The next morning, I told my mother what
happened. I explained my confusion to her. I
really didn’t know how he felt or more
important, how I felt. I knew I liked him but I
brushed it off as a budding friendship. She
gave me a look of disappointment but didn’t
say a word.

The first day back from break,
Chad came up to me and
grabbed my hand. Our interlaced
fingers excited me and I knew all
of the answers to my questions.
He liked me and I liked him.
People whispered and gossiped
but that didn’t affect us.
After a month, his kisses grew
longer and my smile grew wider.
Is this what love was like? Did I
love Chad Fin?

I told my mom my feelings and despite her distaste
for my decision to be with Chad, she told me it’s just
a phase and merely feels like love.
She may have been right and the feelings definitely
changed but it was more of a deepening rather than
a disappearing. By prom, Chad had told me he loved
me and I knew I loved him as well. It had only been
five months since our first kiss but something finally
was mine and not my mother’s. Chad was my
choice. Everything had always been chosen for me
my whole life and he was something different.

Graduation was nearing and so
were both of our times in
Hollywood. We were stronger
than ever. I was set to attend
Juilliard and he was to attend
Columbia. Lucky for us, we would
be both in New York City ready to
start our lives together.
Graduation was uneventful. We
spent a wonderful summer
together traveling up and down
the West Coast and basking in
the sun.

The end of August grew near and so did the
end of summer. I packed what I could fit of
my closet in my pink Dior suitcase. Chad and I
purchased seats in first class together. I
arrived at the airport early with my mother by
my side. Last time I talked to Chad, he said he
was on his way. We waited thirty minutes for
Chad and it wasn’t like him to be late. I got a
call five minutes before our flight was set to
take off from the hospital. There had been an
accident involving Chad’s limo. We
immediately rushed to the hospital but we
didn’t make it in time.
