What is a Butterfly?

A butterfly is an insect with a pair of big beautiful, colorful 

wings. It's body is covered by little sensory hairs. Like all 

other insects, it has six jointed legs, 3 body parts, a pair of 

antennas, compound eyes, and an exoskeleton. The three body 

parts are the head, thorax, and abdomen. 

All butterflies and moths experience metamorphosis. 

During metamorphosis they experience four stages of life. 

These stages of life include egg, larva, pupa(chrysalis) and 

adult.

The First Stage:

The Egg

The adult butterfly usually lays her eggs on the under side of a leaf. 

The egg sticks under the leaf due to a special glue that is produced 

naturally with the egg. Depending on the temperature the eggs can 

hatch within a couple of days or a couple of months.  

The Second Stage:

Eggs Hatching

When a caterpillar is ready to hatch, it nibbles a tiny hole from the 

the top of the egg.After a period of time it has eaten away a hole 

big enough that it can crawl out.
