“Al, let’s go get some ice cream at The Dari,” Al’s
mom said. The family spent all weekend exploring their
new community after just moving to Buffalo, New York.
Although they did some sight-seeing, mom was still
worried about Al and his new school. His first day would
be Monday morning.
Al continued to lick his ice cream carefully around all
the edges.
Once the family arrived back at home Al said, “Mom!
It’s past 7:00! I should be in bed!” He put on his
favorite dinosaur pajamas and his mom tucked him in.

Al woke up from his quiet alarm clock. Beep! He then
changed out of his dinosaur pajamas and into his
clothes. He grabbed his stuffed dinosaur on his way to
the kitchen. When he arrived in the kitchen, his mother
told him to get ready for his first day at his new school.
Later, his mother walked him to his classroom and
told him to have a great day.
All throughout the day she wondered how Al was
going to fit into his new school.

After school Al stepped off the bus where his mom
greeted him. “How was your day?” asked his mom.
Al responded, “At 1:32 we had science class and
we are going to learn about robotics.”
As they approached the driveway Al ran upstairs
to get his dinosaur.
The next few days were just as good as the first,
and Al’s mom began feeling more comfortable that Al
was making friends.
Things were about to change.

The third day of school was different. Al’s classmates were
catching on that something was different. He continued to look
at the clock and remind the teacher when it was time for lunch,
recess, special classes, and announcements. In fact, Billy, a
classmate, said, “Are you late for something like a tea party
with the Mad Hatter? He’s late! He’s late!”
A girl named Marie overheard what was happening and
walked right over to Billy saying, “Hey! Stop! You need to
apologize to Al or I am going to let Mrs. Springfield know about
this.”
Marie was really catching on that Al might be different.
In fact, Al reminded Marie of her younger brother, who
communicated with a computer.

The next science class Al’s teacher Mrs. Springfield
announced a new science project that required group work.
Mrs. Springfield put the class in groups. Al was in a group with
Jake, Victor, Theresa, and Julie.
The students were asked to meet in their groups while Mrs.
Springfield passed out the materials for the group project.
Immediately Victor blurted out, “We don’t want Al in our
group. He’s weird.”
Unfortunately, Mrs. Springfield did not hear what Victor said
but she noticed Al was not seated with his group. She had
one extra robotic kit left. Just at that time Marie noticed Al
alone too and offered to be his partner.
Marie said, “Mrs. Springfield, I will be Al’s partner.” The rest
of the class heard Marie and looked at her in a strange way.
