Stout sighed as he laid in the warm
sunlight streaming through the
front door. The house was still and
quiet. His masters were at work for
the day. “I do love lying in the hot
sun, but I’m feeling a little lonely. I
wonder if Lucy will play with me,”
Stout thought.

Lucy, the orange tabby cat, was curled
up and sleeping in her favorite spot on
the couch. Stout trotted over to her.
“Lucy? Do you want to run up and down
the stairs with me? We can have a
race! It will be so much fun!” he
barked. Lazily, Lucy picked up her head
and glared at the black dog. “No thank
you. I’m quite happy sitting here on my
throne,” she hissed in reply.

Stout walked away
sadly. He found
another sunny spot
by the back door and
plopped down. He
fell asleep, dreaming
of sticks in the
backyard, belly rubs,
and playing with
Lucy. He woke with a
jolt, and ran to his
cat sister.

“Lucy! Mom and
Dad won’t be
home for hours!
Let’s lay on the
bed, right on the
pillows! That’s
the most
comfortable spot!
I’ll even let you
have Mom’s
pillow. Let’s go!”

“Lay on the
bed with a
dog? Never!
Dog breath!
Yuck,” Lucy
scowled in
reply. She
returned her
head to her
paws and
went back
to sleep.

Stout
jumped on
the bed, but
it wasn’t the
same
without his
sister. He
didn’t even
bother to lay
his head on
Mom’s
pillow.

As he sat on the bed,
Stout began to feel
frustrated. He may
have dog breath, but
what dog didn’t? He
was fun! He was
good at cuddling! He
gave the best kisses
of any dog he knew!
Why wouldn’t Lucy
want to spend time
with him?

Stout jumped off
the bed with
determination. He
ran downstairs as
fast as all four
legs could carry
him and jumped
on the couch,
practically
knocking Lucy
from her favorite
spot.

She meowed
loudly, “What
do you think
you are doing?”
“Lucy, we would
have so much
fun playing
together! You
don’t know
what you’re
missing! Look!”

Stout ran to the
middle of the living
room carpet. He
sat down. He gave
Lucy one paw, then
the other. He lied
down, and then
rolled over. He
crept towards her
slowly, his most
impressive trick.
