"Our purpose in Vietnam is to prevent
the success of aggression. It is not
conquest, it is not empire, it is not
foreign bases, it is not domination. It
is, simply put, just to prevent the
forceful conquest of South Vietnam by
North Vietnam."
Lyndon B. Johnson - Remarks on
Receiving the National Freedom Award
(February 23, 1966)

What Johnson is trying to depict is that in his view,
the purpose of the war is not to conquest
anything, but he thinks it's to prevent the success
of the enemy.
This quote is significant because it shows that in
some peoples' view, the war was for good, not for
bad, like many people believed. In my opinion, this
quote is showing pro war sentiment because
Johnson never said anything about being against
the Vietnam war because he believes it was doing
good.

"No event in American history is more
misunderstood than the Vietnam War. It was
misreported then, and it is misremembered
now."
Richard Nixon - No More Vietnams (1985)

In this quote, Nixon is saying that everyone has
their view on the Vietnam War and many people
may have reported things that were and weren't
true about the war. Many people may remember
things that were falsely reported and no one will
ever know the true stories.
This quote doesn't depict pro or anti-war
sentiment because Nixon is simply saying things
were falsely reported and many of it is what
people remember to be true.

"I saw courage in both the Vietnam War and in
the struggle to stop it. I learned that patriotism
includes protests, not just military service."
John Kerry - Announcement Speech
(September 2, 2003)

John Kerry talks about how war is a scary thing
and while people are brave enough to fight in it,
they are also brave enough to try to stop it.
Everyone needs to work together to stop the
war, though.
This quote is pro and anti-war. They have the
courage to fight in the war while keeping the
courage through the struggle to stop it.
Americans need to be patriotic, too, and not
rely strictly on the military.

"No one should have to
go through the
experience I did
because War is Hell!"
Raymond E. Johnson -
Vietnam War: The
Experience Through
The Eyes Of A Soldier

Raymond E. Johnson was talking about his
experience during the war. He doesn't wish his
experience on anybody, because it was so bad.
He actually fought in the war, himself, so he
knows just how bad it really was.
This quote is very anti-war. He says that war is
Hell and nobody should have to go through
that. He hates the fact that he had to go
through war, and hopes nobody else has to.

"Yesterday, I got a letter from my friend
fighting in Vietnam
And this is what he had to say
'Tell all my friends that I'll be coming home
soon
My time'll be up some time in June
Don't forget", he said, "To tell my sweet Mary
Her golden lips are sweet as cherry.'"
“Vietnam” - Jimmy Cliff (1970)

The man in the song is happy to finally be
coming home. He misses his friends and
girlfriend. His friends miss him, too. The
significance is that he gives an in-site to
everything he had to leave behind.
This isn't exactly pro or anti-war. The man is
just happy to come home to see his friends and
girlfriend again.

"We had no cameras to shoot the landscape
We passed the hash pipe and played our Doors
tapes
And it was dark, so dark at night
And we held on to each other
Like brother to brother
We promised our mothers we'd write"
"Goodnight Saigon" - By Billy Joel (1982)

The didn't have anyway to document the war,
but they smoked pipes and played music. They
stayed together and helped each other find
their ways around.
These song lyrics are somewhat pro war
because they had fun smoking their pipes,
playing music, and getting along like brothers.
They promised to write their family, too. They
seemed to have fun together, when not actually
fighting.
