A small squirrel falls out of his tree and onto a large leaf pile
after his mother leaves to search for food. Opening his eyes
for the first time, he began to look around. Having only heard
his mother's voice before, he started to search for her.
"Momma!" he chirped.
But there was no response. Surely she couldn't have gotten
far. He wandered off in the direction of a creek before
encountering a group of ground squirrels. They were about
the same size as he was, but they looked different. Maybe
they knew where his mother went.

"Can you carry food in your cheeks?" they asked, with their
mouths stuffed with nuts, too busy with what they were doing
to stop and hear what he had to say.
Wallo tried, but he could not store any food in his cheeks. He
decided to carry them in his arms while he helped the family
relocate their stash. Maybe then they would listen to him.
"You have wings like a bird!" one screeched as Wallo let go of
his cargo.
"What's a bird?" he chirped back while they all inspected his
flaps.
"Begone!" they cried, in fear of being eaten, as they pushed
him out of their burrow.

Wallo ran towards the creek away from the ground squirrels and
stopped to catch his breath before hearing a loud 'Crooak.'
Poking his head through the brush, he saw a large bullfrog sat
fat on a big lily pad.
"What are you?" Wallo asked, curious about the warty
amphibian.
The toad continued to croak, paying no attention to Wallo as its
marble like eyes began to race around before it shout out its
tongue with a SNAP!
"Ew..." Wallo squirmed, turning his attention to the creek and
the rest of its inhabitants.
"Well, she's sure not around here," he said before leaving the
frogs to their feast.

He began to follow the creek's edge before coming across a
fallen tree.
"Hello?" he echoed into the hollow log, only to hear silence
return his call.
He looked around and then peered into the darkness once more.
"Better take the safe route," he thought aloud, climbing up on
top of the makeshift bridge, and started to casually trot across
before a strong wind picked up and nearly knocked him over.
Cling to the bark with his tiny, sharp claws, he shivered in
fright. Wallo peered over the edge to see the water trailing
under and with a heavy sigh, he started to crawl across, being
careful not to be swept away.

Reaching the end, he hopped off and looked around before
setting off down a clear path between the trees. Traveling
farther away from home, he asked around to see if anyone had
seen his mother. He stopped to ask the hedgehog, but no luck.
The deer hadn't seen her either, but offered to give Wallo a
boost high above the ground for a while to search for her.
Thanking the deer once he was on the ground again, he
continued to look elsewhere. The skunk was too busy sleeping,
and quite frankly, too much for poor Wallo's nose to even ask.
He was starting to become discouraged as the sun began to set.
