This book is dedicated to, Ms. Valerie Hughley.
She has influenced my life since second grade.
Ms. Val is a positive role mode, mother, and leader in our society.
Being that Valerie was the first African American woman
on the Florida City police force, she should be
recognized as part of Black History
month. On this day, May 8, 2016, I wish you a
happy Mother’s Day.

Ms.Valerie Hughley attended A.L. Lewis Elementary
School then transferred to West Homestead
Elementary School. In 1974, she graduated from
South Dade Senior High. After graduating from
South Dade, Valerie attended Miami Dade
Community College north and south campuses. She
started out in a C.E.T.A. program which was called
“New Career”. She attended college classes three
days a week. Then she worked 2 days out of the
week with OJT meaning “On the Job Training.”

At the end of her first year with C.E.T.A., they
sponsored Valerie so that she could have the
opportunity to attend the police academy. Ms.
Valerie Hughley was the first to be sponsored in
Florida City. Florida City is a small town that leads
you into the beautification of the Florida Keys. On
July 2, 1982, Valerie Hughley became the first
African American female to join forces with the
Florida City Police Department.

Being that she was the first African American
woman on the police force, Valerie faced many
challenges in life. Serving as a police officer in
Florida City, Florida, Valerie faced racism. She also
suffered with sexual harassment and hostile work
environments, which only made her stronger. She
brought knowledge to her community. With this
knowledge, she was able to handle stressful
situations.
