“Where did you say you wanted me to put this?” Chris
asked Dereck as he held up his notebook.
“Just set it on the dresser by the lamp.”
Dereck sat at his computer while Chris sat beside him.
Dereck and Chris have been best friends since they
were eight years old. Now they’re both sixteen, and
Chris has been keeping a secret from Dereck for years.
Chris has been in love with Dereck for as long as he can
remember, but Dereck has no idea. he doesn’t even
know that his best friend is gay, and the fear of
rejection and judgement has led Chris to keep it a
secret.

“Alright, we should get out of here and head to school,”
Dereck said, snapping Chris out of his thoughts, “And
don’t forget about Hazel’s party tonight, she invited us.”
Chris nodded, grabbed his backpack and followed Dereck
out the door. School was something different for Chris
and Dereck. Dereck hung out with the jocks and
cheerleaders, while Chris, on the other hand, was a
loner.
“I’ll catch you at lunch,” said Dereck before trotting off
to his football friends.
Chris watched him walk away, then turned to head to
class. Just as he turns around, he runs into someone.

“Oh man, I’m sorry I wasn’t paying attention.” Chris
exclaimed while helping the boy pick up his books.
“It’s alright, don’t sweat it.” Chris became speechless
while he gazed at the boy standing before him. He’d
never seen anyone so astonishing, well besides Dereck.
“I’m Chad by the way, I’m new here.”
Chris began to babble, “I-I-I’m Chris.” He was so
embarrassed he just laughed to play it off.
“Well, catch you later dude.” Chad said with a smile,
and went about his way.

During first period all Chris could think about was
Chad. Is he gay? Does he know I’m gay? Chris wants to
tell Chad that he’s attracted to him, but he doesn’t want
him to get offended if he’s not gay, or reject him
because he’s not his type. Thinking negatively is making
him nervous. On top of all of this, no one in the school
even knows Chris is gay. He’s had this secret for so
long, how would anyone act if they found out? Being
accepted is so important to Chris, if no one else is gay
he feels like he shouldn’t be either.
