One unique land formation we have here on
our Earth is a volcano, which is a mountain that
opens up into a pool of lava. When pressure from
this heat and lava builds up, eruptions occur.
Volcanoes are formed from the molten rock
pushing its way up through Earth's surface and
over time through the explosions, they get bigger
and bigger. An example of a volcano is Kilauea in
Hawaii, which is one of the worlds most active
volcanoes.

Another example of a land formation is an
island, which is an area of land not connected to
a bigger area of land and surrounded by water.
They are formed when the rising sea cuts off a
piece of land that connected it to the continent.
Many people do not know that Greenland is
actually an island, and it's the largest one in the
world. The picture to the right is of the island
Madagascar.

A cavern is also an example of an earth land
formation. Caverns form in rocks over millions of
years when water seeps through the cracks in
the rocks. Many different animals live in caves
like bats, spiders, and sometimes even bears
hang out in them. The deepest cave in The U.S.
is the Kazumura Cave in Hawaii. It is 40 miles
deep.

An example of a freshwater formation is a
glacier, which form in bodies of water over many
years due to snow and ice building up faster than
it is removed. Glaciers are constantly moving
through the water due to their slope and gravity.
Scientists study glaciers to keep track of the
earth's climate.
