I was considered one of the lucky ones because I had
known a life besides slavery but I didn't think I was. None
of us were lucky.

My family and I were captured when I was 5 and placed aboard
a vessel named Esperanza. At first I was excited to be going on a
journey. My whole life I had sought for adventure.

As I looked around, people were being shoved under
the deck of the vessel. Mothers frantically looked for
their children and others tried to jump off the deck. I
didn't understand what was happening.

I was grabbed by a strange white man and was dragged away
from my mother as I shouted her name. I was forced to lay under
the deck, tightly compact with both people I knew and people I
had never seen before. This adventure was quickly turning into a
nightmare.

The voyage was excruciatingly long and many didn't
survive the journey. When the ship docked, we were
forced out from under the deck. When I tried to walk
my legs felt like jello, I couldn't move. A white man
came down and carried me from the ship.

I thought the worst was over when I was removed from
the ship but I was wrong. The white man that carried me
from the ship stripped me down and forced me to stand
in front of a large group of people who were bidding on
me.

A mean looking white man won the bidding and
took me to work on his farm. He was a cruel master

Master got angry with me because I couldn't do very
much work but I tried, I tried to do better. I didn't want
to go through the horror of being sold again unfortunately
fate wasn't on my side.
