Florida Panther
Author: Maria Teresa Bettaglio
Illustrator: Maria Teresa Bettaglio

Florida Panther is the state animal of Florida.

Their bodies are mainly covered in tawny-beige
fur, except for the white belly and chest.

Baby panthers are born with black spots that last
two months. These spots help them camouflage
with the woods; keeping them safe from
predators.

When they are adults black markings decorate
only the tip of the tail, ears, and around the nose.

Because cities grew and people hunted them too
much Florida panthers became an endangered
species. Today they are only found in the
southwestern tip of Florida.

Florida panthers are carnivores. They eat
animals such as deer and feral hogs.

Panthers grow to be about 6-7 feet long!

They live in warm climate habitats like swamps
and forests.

Since there are so few panthers left, hunting
them is illegal.

Panther's back legs are longer than the front
ones. This allows them to jump higher and
longer, making them great hunters.

Florida panthers are also known as puma,
cougar and mountain lion.

The litter size is about 1-4 kittens.

Kittens stay with their mother until they are
two years old.

Panther's are nocturnal animals, they hunt
and travel at night and sleep during the day.

The panther is at the highest division of the food
chain order.

Puma concolor coryi is the scientific name
for the Florida Panther.

Panthers are usually quiet, but when they do
communicate they purr, moan, growl and hiss.

Before Florida Panther's habitat use to range
from Florida all the way to Louisiana and
Arkansas.

Today Florida Panthers are only found in southern
Florida; in swamp-lands such as Everglades
National Park and Big Cypress National Preserve.
