This book is about two girls that go on
a picnic and find themselves sitting with
a fairy in a very special tree. When Anne
gets stuck up the tree Lilli and the fairy
must go on a very exciting adventure
to Fairyland to save her.
3

Anne woke to see Lilli looking out of the cottage window at the
beautiful mountain landscape.
“How do you fancy a picnic in the woods today?” Lilli asked.
Lilli, with blonde curly hair and dark blue eyes, was the
older of the two sisters.
“Ooh, yes please,” Anne eagerly replied. Anne had extremely
long blonde hair and beautiful green eyes.
“Come on, let’s go downstairs and ask Mother and Father,” Lilli
suggested.
“But have brekky first,” Anne added. Their mother was a kind
woman in her 30’s and loved to bake for her girls. Their father
was a lovely man but was often pulled away to work.

dishes to greet them.
“Good morning,” the girls chorused.
“Father?” asked Anne over her toast. “Can Mother maybe
make us a picnic and then you take us to have it in the
forest?”
“I’m sorry girls,” Father replied without looking up from his
newspaper. “But something went wrong at the mill and I need to
look into that,”
“Ooh,” the girls pouted.
“Lilli,” chimed in Mother, having listened to their
conversation. “You’re turning 12 in a couple of days.
I’m sure you can take Anne.”
“Anne squealed “We’re going on a picnic! We’re going on a
picnic!” she chanted.
5

It was settled. Mother packed a basket with fruit, fruit salad,
homemade chocolate cake, lemonade and cups. Lilli even
snuck in some fruit smoothies! Anne ducked into the shed and got out their skipping
ropes and hoola-hoops to play with. At 11:30am Anne and Lilli set out towards the
woods.
Once inside the woods Anne moaned, “There aren’t any good spots around here.
Now we have to walk even further!”
“If you carry the basket, the hoola-hoops and the skipping ropes, I’ll give you a piggy
back,” Lilli compromised.
“Yes please!” answered Anne.
A few minutes later Lilli puffed “The branches, puff, in that tree, puff, are making a
cage like, puff, thing. It would, puff, be perfect for our, puff, picnic.”
“Yes,” agreed Anne. “Oh, and if you’re tired you can put me down.”
Lilli gratefully, but carefully of course, put Anne down.
6

“Hold on!” exclaimed Lilli. “I’ll go up first to make sure it’s safe.”
“Well then GO!”
“Ok, Ok.”
Lilli climbed up the Oak and into the branch-cage.
“Come on up,” she called.
“Yippee,” Anne squealed. She climbed up and helped her sister set up their food.
After they had set up their food, they heard a rustling in the branches above them.
Suddenly a girl climbed out and down next to them. She had blondish-white
silky hair, and she was wearing a pretty pink dress and matching tiara. Anne
gasped. Then she suddenly fainted! She slipped, and fell out of the tree!
“Anne!” screamed Lilli. The girl was frozen. When she unfroze she had the
unconscious Anne in her arms!
“How did you do that?” Lilli breathed.
7

“Oh, umm, err,” stuttered the girl.
“Ooooh,” Anne groaned as she came to.
“Anne,” Lilli said in a worried tone.
“Yes?” Anne replied, a little woozy.
“You’re alright!” a grateful Lilli exclaimed. “What made you
faint, anyway?” she asked.
“I thought I saw a… Wait a second. Who’s holding me?” she
asked slowly.
“Umm, well I actually don’t know. Who are you,” Lilli asked
the girl.
“Well, my name is Silky. What are yours?” the girl replied.
“I’m Lilli and that’s Anne you’re holding there,” answered Lilli.
“Umm, can whoever is holding me please put me down now?” Anne asked.
“Oh, sorry,” Silky apologised. She put Anne down. Anne almost fainted again!
“Are those w-w-w-wings?” she stuttered.
“Oh Anne,” Lilli said. “Don’t be silly. She doesn’t have wings. She’s not even wearing fake
ones, so how can she have real ones?”
“Anne’s right,” Silky said quietly.
8

“What?” Lilli’s voice was shaky. “B-b-but I can’t see any
wings.”
“That’s only because you don’t believe in fairies,” Silky replied.
“Well I’m starting to now! I think I can vaguely make out an
outline.”
“Did you see how I froze a minute ago?” Silky asked.
“Yes.”
“You would have seen me fly if you believed.”
“Really? I would have?” asked Lilli, with wide eyes.
“Yes. Really.”
“Hey, I think I can see your wings now!” Lilli cried.
“You can?” Anne excitedly asked.
“Yes!”
9

“No,” the sisters replied.
“It’s called the Tale Tree because at the very top, there is a
ladder that leads into a fairy tale land. Sometimes the land at
the top is Rapunzel, sometimes Snow White and the 7 Dwarves. Nobody
knows until they go up,” Silky explained.
“Oooh, can we go up and look at which land is up there now,” Anne
asked.
“Yeah, let’s go!” Lilli cried. They all climbed up to the top of the tree and
found the ladder. Anne popped her head up through the thin mist and
gasped.
“What is it?” Lilli asked. “Which land is it?”
“Rapunzel’s land!” Anne cried back. She started to climb up into the land.
“No, Anne, no!” Silky yelled. “The lands are about to switch! You might
not get out again for years!” But it was too late.
10

When Anne climbed out into the land, she was absolutely
amazed. The entire scene was beautiful. She was at the
edge of a very short hidden tunnel, and at the end was a
big stretch of grass, covered with daisies and buttercups,
and off to one side was a waterfall, ending in a small pool.
All that was amazing, but what really caught her eye was
the huge, tall tower in the centre, and the funny thing was,
that it had no door. She blinked, and then found herself
inside the tower! She turned, and found a whole lot of
what looked like golden hair. In fact, it actually was hair.
Her hair!
11

“What are we going to do!? What are we going to do!?”
Lilli cried. She was crying.
“Don’t worry,” Silky kept saying, trying to soothe her. “Everything will be
alright.”
“Does anything bad happen in Rapunzel?” Lilli asked.
“Well actually,” Silky suggested. “I think that Anne might actually be in Tangled,
the newer version of Rapunzel. Oh, and I don’t think that bad happens in Tangled
until towards the end,” she added.
“Oh good,” Lilli sighed.
“Now to figure out how to change the lands back,” suggested Silky.
“Yes,” agreed Lilli. “Hey, can’t you use magic?”
“Well, yes,” Silky slowly replied. “But it would take loads of magic. Maybe too
much.”
“What do mean ‘too much’?” Lilli enquired.
“Well, if fairies use too much of their magic, they can get really sick,” she
explained.
“But they can get better, right?” asked Lilli.
12

“Yippee!” Lilli cut her off. “So you can change back the
lands. Then we can get Anne back!” Silky sighed, defeated.
“Well, are you going to cast the spell, or what?”
“First I need a few things,” Silky instructed.
“Are they hard to find? I hope not. I’m not very good at spotting things.”
“Don’t worry, most of the ingredients are pretty common. I need the left side of a
pink mushroom, an eagle’s wing feather, and a jewel from a royal fairy’s crown.
Do you have any of those?”
“Well, I’ve got an eagle feather. Anne likes collecting things, and when she found it
she asked me to hold it.”
“Good,” Silky said gleefully. “Now let’s find the pink mushroom.” They started
searching through the woods.
“I found it!” Silky cried.
“Now, err, where are we going to find a jewel from a royal fairy’s crown?” asked
Lilli.
“In fairyland, of course!” Silky exclaimed.
“What, but, I don’t have any wings,” Lilli worriedly pointed out.
“Oh, don’t worry,” Silky said, smiling.

"The Tale Tree's Ladder"
A fantasy novel, not very unlike Enid Blyton's very own "The Magic Faraway Tree". I am hoping this book by a 9 year old girl doing this for a school project will become a favourite with the public. Enjoy your reading!
