The rainforest is 

full of beautiful 

creatures, but 

one of the most 

colorful is the 

butterfly.

Butterflies have symmetrical wings 

containing different colors and patterns.

Before this insect becomes an adult that 

can fly through the air, it has to go through 

a complete life cycle.

The life cycle of a butterfly has four stages: 

egg, caterpillar, pupa, and butterfly.

In the first stage, a butterfly lays tiny, 

round eggs on a leaf.

From these eggs come caterpillars, the second 

stage of the butterfly life cycle. Caterpillars 

spend most of their time eating leaves and 

flowers so that they can grow very fast.

When caterpillars are done eating and  

growing, they enter the pupa stage. 

In this part of the life cycle, the caterpillar 

forms a pupa, also known as a chrysalis, 

around its body. This is a coating that 

protects the insect as it begins to 

transform into a butterfly.

Once the butterfly is ready to enter stage four, 

the chrysalis opens and a butterfly emerges. The 

butterfly rests and dries its wings from the 

transformation before it takes flight.

Once the life cycle is complete, the adult 

butterfly searches for food and a mate so that 

it can lay eggs and continue the life cycle.
