In the beginning there was nothing. There was
only a vast void of emptiness known as the
chaos. But that soon changed when the first
three immortal beings sprung into existence.
The first to emerge was Gaea the Mother Earth.
Then came Tartarus who would manifest
himself as the underworld. And finally there
was Eros who brought love into being. Gaea,
without any partner gave birth to Uranus
(father sky), Ourea (Mountains), and Pantus
(Sea). She made Uranus her equal and married
him so they could rule over all that came into
being and give birth to new immortal beings.

The first six immortal children Uranus and
Gaea brought into being were the three
Hundred-Handed Giants and the three
Cyclopes which were expert craftsmen. Gaea
loved her children but Uranus hated them
because he feared their terrible strength. So as
each child was born Uranus took them, bound
them, and threw them all into Tartarus where
they would be imprisoned for eternity. Gaea
hated Uranus for taking her children away
from her. She longed for her children, but she
bottled her feelings waiting for the ideal
moment to get revenge.

The next immortal children born to Gaea and
Uranus were thirteen Titans. These Titans and their
children became the oldest generation of greek
gods. They included Helios, Selene, Oceanus,
Themis, Cronus, Rhea, Atlas, Prometheus, and
Epimetheus who married the first mortal women
Pandora. Gaea longed for revenge against Uranus
and wanted to free her imprisioned children in
Tartarus. So she came to her Titan children and
asked for help overthrowing Uranus. All the Titan
children were too afraid though with the exception
of one. Cronus, the youngest and bravest of the
Titans, agreed to help his mother. To aid him, Gaea
gave Cronus a flint sickle which he would use to
defeat his father.

Cronus found a hiding spot while Uranus and Gaea
laid beside one another on the seashore. When
nightfall came Cronus decided to strike. He emerged
from his hiding spot and defeated his father with the
flint sickle. Being immortal Uranus did not die, but his
power had ended and his bodied joined the sea. From
Uranus' blood Gaea brought forth three black-clothed
furies and a group of beings called the Giants.
Eventually, Aphrodite the goddesses of beauty also
emerged from the foam of the sea where Uranus had
been defeated. Cronus had deposed his father and his
rein had begun. But like Uranus, Cronus also feared
the Cyclopes and Hundred-Handed Giants refusing to
free them. Gaea felt betrayed by Cronus because he
did not free her children. This now made Cronus an
enemy of Gaea.

Gaea being a goddesses of prophecy was able to tell Cronus his
destiny. The angry and disappointed goddess took delight in telling
Cronus that his own son would one day overpower him as he
overpowered his own father. Cronus wanted to rule for all eternity so
he devised a way to escape his fate. Every time he and his wife Rhea
bore another child Cronus took no chances. As soon as the child was
born he would take it from Rhea and swallow it in one bite to prevent
the child from growing up and overthrowing him. Cronus swallowed
five of his children whole including Hestia, Demeter, Hera, Hades, and
Poseidon. This caused Rhea great distressed and when she was
pregnant for a sixth time she was determined to keep Cronus from
eating the child. She devised a plan with Gaea to give birth in secrecy
on the island of Crete and have nymphs raise the baby to adulthood in
safety. After the baby had been born and was safely hidden, Rhea gave
Cronus a baby sized rock wrapped in a cloth for him to eat thinking it
was the new born baby. The trick worked and the baby, who was
named Zeus, was able to grow in to adulthood without Cronus ever
knowing.
