It's the first day of school at 

Mary Ann Harris Elementary. 

The day is just about to wind 

down.

" OK class lets get ready to pack 

up and get your stations 

organized. "

Says Mrs.Baldwin who is a first 

grade teacher.

" It's the first day of school. I need to know by a show 

of hands. Does everyone knows the procedure on how 

your going to get home?"

Says Mrs. Baldwin.

Mrs. Baldwin sits back and waits patiently for a few 

seconds just to make sure she could see if there were 

any hands up.

She walks up and down the isle to make personal eye 

contact with the kids to get them comfortable in her own 

teacher way. Besides she's no rookie. Mrs. Baldwin has 

been teaching for 25 years. So she would know if one of 

these kids were unsure of themselves.

She continues to pave the isle with her 2inch heels. Then 

she spots this wide eyed little girl with a look of uncertainty 

on her face. Then again she chants off.

" So I take it everyone knows what bus to get on?"

She takes one last look and makes sure she kept her eyes 

on the girl who didn't look so sure.

"Hmm Lee, do you know the bus your getting on ?" Asked 

Mrs. Baldwin.

" Hmmm huh yes Mrs. Baldwin."

" Yes I do. "

Says Lee who is the wide eye girl Mrs. Baldwin spotted 

looking unsure.

" OK so let's all pack our things and gather our 

belongings class."

" We'll make a single file line on the side by the coat 

racks and wait for the bell."

Says Mrs. Baldwin. 

The kids gather belongings and start to form a line 

against the the wall where Mrs.Baldwin asked them to. 

Lee got up and started gathering her belongings.

She walked over to the line and started to think to 

herself.

   ( Lee thinking to herself)

OK I know my bus number 253 mom and I went over it 

a gazillion times at home last night and this morning. 

All I have to do is step up when they call 253.

" Lee "

" Lee "

Yells Mrs. Baldwin trying to get Lee's attention.

" Yes 253 yes, that's my bus number "

Answers Lee in a hurry as if she was snapping out of 

a deep thought.

" Well I think you better hurry they called 253   30 seconds ago."

"I'm sure your not far behind,they just called it."

" Hurry lets go!" Says Mrs. Baldwin 

She puts her hand gently on the back of Lee's book bag. 

They walk toward the front of the school doors. Mrs. 

Baldwin hands her off to another administrator who is 

helping the kids locate their correct bus.

" She rides bus 253 "

Says Mrs Baldwin to the administrator.

" OK " says the administrator.

Mrs. Baldwin looks at Lee and gives her a nod.

" You have a good evening.   "

" I'll see you tomorrow. "

" Bye, bye Mrs. Baldwin " 

Says Lee with a uncertain look on her face.

The administrator escorts Lee outside of the building. He walks her 

under the breeze way where all of the yellow buses are parked. He 

then points in a direction to let Lee know that her bus was over there.

" Your looking for 253 right? " 

Says the administrator.

" Yes "     Answers Lee.

" That's the bus right there. " 

Lee looks over in the direction where the administrator 

had been pointing. She starts to walk in the direction, 

but she is still confused and doesn't see her bus number 

253.

 ( Lee thinking to herself )

Oh no I should've asked that teacher to show me 

exactly where the bus was. All of these yellow buses I'm 

so confused. I don't see the number 253. I see numbers 

on the bus. I can't seem to find 253. Oh no! 

Lee starts to panic as she hears the diesel engines of the buses 

cut on and start   roaring to get ready to depart.

She makes one last attempt to see if the bus that she thought 

the teacher pointed to was hers. She asked a boy who was 

getting on the bus she thought was 253.

" Hey" is this 253 " ask Lee

" Yea" he answers with a quick yes as if he didn't even 

notice her at all.Without a moments notice Lee jumped 

onto the bus with a little bit more confidence knowing 

that the bus she was on was the right one. 

Lee gets on the bus an squeezes onto the edge of the 

very first seat. The bus takes off and Lee immediately 

starts   to look out of the window.

Ten minutes goes by and the bus is approaching it's first 

let off spot. This spot doesn't look familiar to Lee so she 

scoots over to let the girl out that was sitting next to 

her. 

Lee then scoots all the way over to the window to see if 

she recognizes anything familiar. Lee's mom is supposed 

to meet her at the bus stop so she knows when she sees 

her she's safe. The bus driver comes to his second stop. 

The kids start to get off. Lee starts looking out of the 

window back and forth trying to see if she sees her 

mother, because she doesn't recognize the area again. 

The bus has only 4 kids left on it including Lee. The bus 

takes off and Lee starts to worry that she might have 

gotten on the wrong bus.The bus driver starts to pull up 

to the last stop.

"OK scholars, this is the last stop I will see you kids 

tomorrow." 

Says the bus driver, as he puts the bus in park and 

pushes the door open to let the kids off the bus. The 

three kids that were behind Lee who were older starting 

departing the bus. 

Lee is still confused about where she was. Lee 

hadn't come to the fact that she might have 

caught the wrong bus. The bus driver looks over 

his shoulder behind him and notices Lee not 

budging to get off the bus.

 "Hey little lady are you OK?"

" This is your stop isn't it?"

Asked the bus driver of Lee. 

Lee looks at him with a sad face and says " I 

thought it was "

" Is this Bus 253? "

" Oh no darling "

" This is bus 353 

Answers the bus driver.

" You caught the wrong bus "

" But no need to worry, I'll take you back to the school 

before everyone leaves. "

" That way they can call your parents "

Says the bus driver.

Lee looks at the bus driver as if she was getting ready to 

tear up and cry.

"Oh no you don't " says the bus driver

" It's no need to cry, we all make mistakes."
