One day, best friends, Tommie and John, were walking to
school. As they walked in the door, their classmate, Pete,
ran up to them. “Are you guys running in the race today”,
Pete asked.

“No” Tommie said, “we’re not tall like the other
kids”. It was the tall kids that ran in all the
races. No short kids had ever tried to run in fear
that their little legs wouldn’t help them run fast.
The taller kids always made fun of the shorter
kids.

Pete had seen Tommie and John running around the
neighborhood and thought they might be able to
compete. “Come on, you guys are the fastest short kids
i've ever seen, you have to race.”Tommie and John
looked at each other unconvinced. “We’ll think about it”,
said John.

After lunch ended, everyone went outside for
recess. Almost everyone went to the back of the
yard where a large patch of grass made the
perfect spot for a race. Someone laid a jump
rope down at the start line and all the tall kids
line up to start.

Suddenly John and Tommie stepped up to the line next
to Pete. One of the tall kids saw this and gave a mean
face to them. “Short kids aren’t good enough to race
with us, have fun finishing last” he said and then
laughed. Someone stood in front of the racers with their
hand raises. “On your marks”, he said “Get set… GO!”.

Everyone in the yard fell silent when they saw
what had happened. Two short kids had
actually beaten the taller, faster kids. Tommie
and John said nothing to the other kids and
started to walk away from the track. Pete
looked back at the taller kids who had a look of
disgust on their faces. He smiled, turned away,
and ran to catch up with Tommie and John.

As the three walked away together, Tommie
and John raised their fists into the air. They had
showed everyone that they were the fastest in
the school. Their raised fists served as a symbol
to the rest of the school that short kids could
compete with everyone else and were no
longer scared to try.
