A long, long time ago in a small village, there
lived a young witch whose name was Marne.
Naturally, Marne spent her days making potions,
flying on her broomstick, and performing spells, as
all witches do. Though she was good at heart,
Marne struggled to contain the evil witch spirit
inside of her and was constantly causing mischief
in the village. One time, she put all the livestock
inside of the town hall. Another time, every
villager’s house was turned upside down in the
middle of the night.

Even though the pranks were usually harmless, the
village people had become tired of Marne’s villainous
ways. Once the houses were righted, the town council
decided that Marne would be locked in a cell for 24
hours without food, water, or magic every time she
played one of her tricks on the village. In the month,
Marne spent twelve nights in the cold, lonely cell, and
she quickly became frustrated with her fellow
villagers.

On October 31st, Marne decided that she would get
revenge on the townspeople for treating her like a prisoner.
The children of the village always went door-to-door on this
night collecting sweet treats for their families in a celebration
of the fall season. Every family made a different dessert or
candy out of the fruits and grains they had harvested that
year. When the children went out to collect their goodies on
this particular evening, Marne began changing them into
different devilish creatures that only a witch could love. She
turned the children into ghosts, zombies, vampires,
werewolves, and even other witches.

When the villagers realized what Marne was doing,
they quickly sprang into action. Every child who had not
been transformed was rapidly disguised as one of these
creatures, so that Marne would think the child had already
been cursed. Ghosts were created out of bed sheets.
Zombies were created by smearing children with green
mosses and brown dirt to make them appear dead and
rotting, and they were instructed to walk as if all of their
muscles were stiff. The vampires were covered in flour and
told to wear dark clothing. The werewolves wore animal
furs and howled at the moon.
