Meeting of the Estates General
The Meeting of the Estates General was
summoned by King Louis XVI in 1614.
The meeting was for the clergy (First
Estate), the nobles (Second Estate), and
the common people (Third Estate). King
Louis summoned the meeting to find
solutions for the government’s financial
problems. The meeting was held in a
courtyard in the Hotel des Menus Plaisirs.


Tennis Court Oath
The Tennis Court Oath was an event in the
beginning of the French Revolution. The
Oath was a pledge signed by 577
members of the Third Estate (who were
locked out of the Meeting of the Estates
General) on June 20, 1789. Honoré
Gabriel Riqueti led the members who
signed the oath and they called
themselves the National Assembly.


Storming of the Bastille
The Storming of the Bastille occurred in
Paris, France on the morning of 14 July
1789. It symbolized tyranny. It was the third
event in the French Revolution. During the
reign of Louis XVI, France faced a major
economic crisis, increased by a regressive
system of tax. The members of the Third
Estate attacked the Bastille (a prison) to
gather men, weapons, and ammunition.




















March of the Versailles
The March on Versailles was one of the
earliest and most significant events of the
French Revolution. The march began
among women in the marketplaces of
Paris on October 5, 1789. The women
were near rioting over the high price and
scarcity of bread. They took King Louis XVI
back to Paris resulting in imprison of King
Louis XVI.
