William shakespeare was known as the great Bard of Stratford 

because he was a famous poet and playwright. He also bought 

and sold real estate. He wrote 37 plays and was one of the 

greatest professional writers in the world. His work is the 

second most quoted after the Bible. He created 3000 words  

in and is known as the greatest wordsmith of all time. He 

wrote histories, comedies, tragedies, and tragicomedies.

 Scholars   believe William Shakespeare   was born on the 

23rd of April in 1564, in a little   English town called 

Stratford-upon-Avon. His father, John Shakespeare, was 

an ale-taster and later an Alderman of Avon. His mother 

was called   Mary and she came from a wealthy family. 

William was baptised   on the 26th of April in the Holy 

Trinity parish church three days after he was born.  

William was one of eight children born to John and Mary.

It is believed that William went to the King's 

New School in Avon and was taught how to 

read and write. He also studied Latin.

He married Anne Hathaway on November the 

27th in 1582 in Temple Grafton. Anne moved 

into the Shakespeare family home. William 

was 18 and Anne was 26. He needed his dad's 

permission to get married.
