This is Carl!

She spends all day waiting for her owner, Sara, to come home 

from school.

All day Carl imagines the fun things they will do together. Now 

that school is out for the summer, Carl can't wait to spend 

every day playing with Sara!

When 3 o'clock rolls around, Carl 

and all her siblings wait by the 

window for Sara to get off the bus.

Carl and her sister Lulu run to Sara when she enters the door. They roll 

around at her feet and rub their noses excitedly against her leg.

"Oh well hi my kitties!" Sara exclaims. "You're so excited! Why are you two 

so happy?" Sara laughs and walks to the fridge to get a snack.

She calls to her mom, "Mom, I'm going to go to Emily's house in a little 

while. Her dad said we can play on the boat!"

From the other room her mother calls back, "Okay honey! Tell Mr. Smith 

thank you. And be polite!"

Carl and Lulu watch Sara walk across the street to her 

neighbor, Emily's, house.

Overcome with sadness, Carl says to Lulu, "I have been 

waiting all day! Sara only wants to play at the beach. I 

wish I could go with her."

"But we don't go in the water, Carl! We don't know how to 

swim!"

Watching Sara 

play in the water 

from the window 

gave Carl an 

idea.

"That's it Lu! If I 

learn to swim, 

then I can play 

with Sarah at the 

beach!" 

"I don't know if that's such a good idea," says 

Lulu, as she follows Carl toward the balcony.

"I know I can do it," replies Carl. "I know I 

can."

Running to the bathroom, Carl turns on the water in the 

bathtub and exclaims, "Let's start here!"

She leaps onto the side of the tub.

"Be careful!" cries Lulu.

Dipping one foot in at a time, Carl makes her first 

attempt at getting in the water.
