It was the first day of school at Wildberry
elementary, and all of the 4th graders were
reuniting with their old friends, and making
some new ones too. Everybody was especially
happy to see George, one of the nicest and
smartest kids in the class. All of the kids were
very happy, but George couldn't help but
notice another student, Ivan, alone in the
corner.
Ivan was by far the biggest kid in the
class, and looked frightening at first.
He moved to Wildberry the year
before, and had made a few friends in
the class. This year he seemed
different, it didn’t look like he
wanted to want to talk to anyone. He
met Georges eyes from across the
room and glowered, but George didn’t
think he had done anything wrong.
This silent staring continued for weeks, but George
didn’t let it bother him. However, one day, in science
class, Mrs. Wilhelm asked the class a question;
“Alright class, who can give me an example of a
mammal?”
George raised his hand to answer, but Ivan blurted out
an answer before he could speak.
“A bear!” he scoffed.
This greatly annoyed George, and it continued to
happen until Mrs. Wilhelm asked him to stop or she
would send him into the hall. George turned to look at
Ivan who smiled wryly and waved.
Later that week, the class was competing in
the school’s annual paper airplane contest.
George learned how to make the perfect plane
using a secret series of folds, which sent it all
the way to the water fountains near the gym,
a new record! Ivan was next, and his plane
flew right over Georges and into the gym itself.
How was this possible? George later found
Ivan’s plane and discovered that it had nearly
the same design as his own, that cheater!
The same day of the paper plane contest was
the water bottle rocket contest, and George
was hoping to redeem himself. Sebastian
had won the competition every year since
kindergarten, and this was the last year to
beat him before the kids moved on to
intermediate school. Sadly, George
misjudged the amount of water to put in
the bottle and it barely made it off the
launch pad. Ivan followed with his rocket
which not only flew higher than
Sebastian’s, but then floated down with a
parachute. George and Ivan met eyes, and a
smug grin spread on Ivan’s face.
Georges patience was starting to wear
thin, but he was trying his best to
avoid confrontation. He decided he
should blow off some steam after
school by racing remote controlled cars
in the park. As he neared the area
where the kids raced their cars, he
noticed the usual crowd. Among them,
though, was Ivan. George didn’t think
he could stand going over there, and
went back home instead.
