Robbert the Camel was a collector. He collected
and kept all sorts of things; from shiny candy
wrappers, to tattered pieces of cloth, to rocks
from the great pyramids of Giza.

Even though Robbert collected lots of
different things, his favorite things to
collect were secrets. There are 20
million people in Cairo, Egypt and that
meant a whole lot of secrets.

Robbert’s keeper was a kindly, old, Egyptian man
named Sahid. Sahid traveled far from home and his
family in order to make a living during the busy
tourist season. He, like his father and grandfather
before him, owned camels that gave tourists rides at
the Pyramids.

Sahid’s grandfather, Mohammed,
rescued an abused baby camel named
Angela whom he nursed back to
health with gentle kindness. She
grew up to be the perfect camel
guide at the Pyramids. Mohammed
never abused Angela’s kind nature and
the two were lifelong friends.

Like his Grandfather, Sahid was poor but happy (except
when he missed his family) and always shared his
oranges with Robbert, explaining that oranges would
make his hump big and strong. Little did Sahid know,
that the strength of Robbert’s hump came from the
mounds of secrets he stored in there.

One day while Robbert was looking for
treasured secrets, he came upon a strange
object. It was bright and shiny. He had
seen some some humans using objects
similar to this one. Sometimes he heard
voices come from the object: people
were talking back. He plucked the gadget
out of the desert sand, held it up to his
face and a picture appeared on the
screen.

Robbert was happy with his special find and stored it in
his hump for safe keeping. Camels used their humps to
store all sorts of things. At the end of each day he
looked over all the things he had found. This new
treasure was his favorite.

It was early May and even though
Robbert was tired after a long day of
giving people rides at the Pyramids,
he always enjoyed working alongside
his best friend Humphrey.

It was late and Robbert and Humphrey settled down
into their bed of soft, clean straw. He put his head
down to sleep, but was startled when he heard a
strange, jiggly sound coming from his hump. The
treasure was talking to him.

He took the object out of his hump and
before his eyes was a picture of a
place he had never seen before. It was
green and swampy with a swimming,
scaly creature in the background.

Robbert was curious. He pressed a
button to find another picture; this
time of an ocean with fish and
birds. Robbert started to daydream
about what he saw; all he ever knew
was the dessert
